Purpose of Job

Provide safe and quality nursing care to patients. Assist RN and Unit Manager with patient care plan and administrative duties within the department.

Job Requirements

Education

High School Diploma or General Education Development (G.E.D.) required.

Completion of 75 or 120 hours Nurse Aide/Nurse Assistant Program or completion of two (2) semesters of clinical practice, in an accredited nursing program required.

Participation in mandatory in-services required.

Successful completion of mandatory continuing education programs required.

Experience

Previous Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) experience preferred.

Experience as an administrative assistant or clerk preferred.

License/Certifications

Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) required.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

Skill using a computer.

Ability to multitask.

Ability to read, write and effectively communicate.

Essential Functions I

Promotes positive relations when interacting with patients, visitors, families, physicians, customers and co-workers.

Nursing unit will be informed of all patients leaving the unit.

Safely position patient in OR holding area.

Ensure that patient is safely transported to operating room.

Used appropriate lifting and transfer techniques when moving or transferring patients.

Stay with pediatric or other patients who cannot be safely left alone

Provides clean, safe environment.

Maintains cleanliness of over-bed table, bedside cabinet and general neat and tidy appearance of room.

Ensure proper operating room sanitation prior to surgery.

Note any deficiencies to proper contact.

Participates in unit specific cleaning (e.g. CSR, DSR, refrigerator, general appearance, etc).

Prepares surgery carts as needed for the day.

Washes transportation carts daily.

Keeps carts prepared to use with sheets, bath blankets and pillow in place.

Acts as receptionist for the department. Handles incoming and outgoing information in person and by telephone.

Always demonstrates proper office communication etiquette.

Takes reports from other departments without error.

Reports vital information to the appropriate nurse immediately.

Obtains information for physicians and telephones stat physician orders immediately upon awareness of the order.

Clerical Support

Label and scan documents into the electronic health record.

Ensure that requests for facsimile copies are completed.

Provide phone communication with selected department or agencies.

Performs vital signs as instructed by nurse. Assists nurse in providing pre-op and post-op cares according to policy, include monitoring vital signs.

Monitor vital signs per policy/procedure or as directed by RN.

Reports abnormal findings immediately to nurse.

Provides safe patient environment.

Records vital signs timely in appropriate location.

Provides pre and post-op care according to policy.

Identifies and reports variances to Unit Manager/Charge Nurse or assigned RN. Reports changes in patient’s condition.

Observes IV function and reports concerns to nurse.

Observes intravenous infusion, patient’s color, activity, skin condition, and responsiveness, respirations, and reports concerns to nurse.

Reports all patient/family concerns to RN or Charge RN.

Essential Functions II

Participates in mandatory in-services and/or CE programs as mandated by policies and procedures/external agencies and as directed by management.
