Actalent
Aerospace Engineer
working with Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence, and Image Processing
Description:
This person will be joining the Guidance, navigation, and control team. This company currently has multiple missions scheduled starting early 2023. There are two main projects the team is working on right now. A lunar lander and a hopper (a mini spacecraft payload that will do space exploration). They will be working on spacecrafts that will land, and future missions will not land but will orbit. They will be involved in design and test (50/50 split of time) for these optical navigation algorithms.
There are some vision processing concepts that are defined, and have some prototypes in place that they will work with as well as creating new concepts and doing new designs. They will be focusing on the existing algorithms for the upcoming mission and verifying the performance of the optical navigation systems.
The software implementations for these algorithms on the spacecrafts are written in C, C++ and Python. This person will be working within OpenCV (a vision processing tool kit that is open sourced). They will be working primarily within C (C++ or Python could be helpful too). They will be using cameras and extracting information. They will be utilizing images to do feature detection across a series of images. They will be utilizing optical navigation techniques – ie crater: take images of craters and utilize different techniques to match to a known database of lunar craters in order to help with navigation and tell how far they are from the moon. They will take various images and utilizing the apparent size of edges and terrains of the moon to tell the distance and help with navigation.
Skills:
-
image processing
-
Python
-
C++ or Computer vision
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
-
Either Masters Degree with 0 years of experience or Bachelors degree with a 2+ years of experience
-
Compiling and using OpenCV for vision navigation (this can be taught, it’s not difficult to learn)
-
Experience with C and C++ and Python would be highly preferred since that is what all of the flight software is written in
-
Any testing experience for vision processing would be a plus (they will teach them their processes for testing and verification)
