He angitūtanga: The opportunity
A job share (20hrs per week) opportunity has a risen to work alongside our existing Whakanewha Conservation Ranger, who is working parttime over the next 10 months. As a Park Ranger, you will be responsible for enabling safe and enjoyable outdoor recreation experiences in regional park settings, while conserving and protecting natural and cultural heritage resources.
This role is based on Waiheke Island at Whakenewha Regional Park and has a focus on conservation outcomes for both Whakanewha Regional Park and Motukorea (Browns Island). This includes pest plant and animal control, revegetation projects, wildlife monitoring and threatened species management (such as Dotterel) and supporting park operations.
You will be responsible for managing and supporting volunteers and external stakeholders to achieve conservation and recreation goals, including overseeing and auditing contractors. You will undertake general park maintenance, historic site protection programs and visitor liaison duties such as campgrounds and visitor arrival areas. You will support the wider ranger team with managing recreational asset maintenance, including mountain bike and walking tracks.
You will be part of a small team covering Whakanewha Regional Park and Motukorea (Browns Island). You will also get the opportunity to work throughout the Southern Sector parks network from time to time. As a ranger in the Southern Regional Parks team you will be required to work weekends and public holidays on a ranger roster system. This will include responding to emergency calls after hours when you are rostered as a duty ranger.
He kōrero mōu: About you
Have a strong background (minimum of 2-3 years practical experience) in conservation, ecology and or biosecurity management; experience in recreation and/or asset management is also highly sought after.
The successful person in this role will be a strong communicator and have a passion for working with volunteers, iwi, community groups and park visitors. You will have a ‘can do’ positive attitude to make things happen, have sound practical experience, be proactive, approachable and motivated.
A conservation, recreation or land management qualification(s) or similar would be highly desirable along with other appropriate licences to support public safety and environmental protection. A current NZ full driver’s licence (be able to drive a manual vehicle) is required for this position.
This role requires working on a 20 hour a week roster system, being available for weekends and public holidays.
