Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Software Developer – Audio Signal Processing within the Covert and Technical Operations area situated within Eastern Command, Sydney with the AFP.
The Software Developer – Audio Signal Processing will be part of a dynamic team in a brand new high-tech facility, which will initially house experts from internal groups and external organisations, bringing together significant expertise to identify operational capability gaps and develop practical, cutting edge and be-spoke audio and video collection solutions for the AFP. The centre will provide an opportunity for law enforcement to meet private industry and academia at the cutting edge of audio capture innovation.
As a Software Developer – Audio Signal Processing in the AFP you will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.
Your duties will include:
The Software Developer – Audio Signal Processing will be responsible for:
· Primarily provide software programming development and subject matter expertise in acoustic signal processing programming with a crossover into hardware development.
· Strong understanding and experience in the development and testing of software in audio capture using any of the following products; microphones, audio codecs, audio recording, audio processing, digital signal processing, audio beamforming.
· Develop and Implement software and/or AI based audio capture products.
· Leverage and enhance existing hardware/software efforts in challenged audio capture environments i.e. development kits.
· Develop new and enhanced audio capture products.
· Influence the engineering lead and other significant stakeholders with proven engineering concepts, knowledge and expertise in audio signal processing software development.
This role requires in-depth knowledge of and experience with the following:
· Possess significant knowledge and expertise in Software Audio Signal Processing.
· Develop and maintain software/firmware that utilize a number of different MCU/DSP, Compute or SoC platforms.
· Contribute to the design of audio signal processing software/firmware.
· Knowledge of embedded ecosystems (such as Linux) including low level drivers, kernel subsystems and userspace applications.
· Delivery of prototypes in a fast paced development environment.
· Ensuring all projects uphold a high standard of functional and technical performance.
· Manage inputs from key stakeholders and collaborators.
· Possess a knowledge of electronic test and measurement equipment & methodologies including audio analysers, oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers, audio measurement tools such as acoustic anechoic chambers, and advanced audio measurement test equipment; all of which may be used to test audio signal processing software development.
Essential requirements, skills or experience:
· Demonstrated experience and knowledge in the development of Audio Signal Processing software.
· High level proficiency in languages such as: C/C++, Python and/or other scripting languages.
· Self-disciplined team player, able to work in multi-disciplinary team environment.
· Strong written and verbal communication to all internal and external stakeholders.
Desirable requirements, skills or experience:
· Formal tertiary qualifications desirable: undergraduate or higher level degrees. Equivalent high level experience will be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
· Experience in embedded software engineering working with real time embedded issues such as interrupt handling, optimization, memory management and threading.
· Experience in embedded software/firmware development: Solid understanding of bare-metal and RTOS firmware development techniques.
· Experience developing on MCU platforms such as Silabs, Nordic NRF, Texas Instruments, STM32 or similar, and/or DSP platforms.
· Experience in developing DSP algorithms on various cores and processes.
· Experience with profiling tools in real-time environments.
· Experience with source control platforms such as GIT etc.
· Experience in working in an Agile development environment.
· Ability to use common lab test equipment, soldering equipment and electronic prototyping technologies.
· Solid understanding of audio technologies and filtering techniques.
· Android software application development.

· To be eligible you must be an Australian Citizen.
· A Negative Vetting 2 (Top Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
