The Area

The ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) operates Australia’s largest optical observatory and has access to the world’s largest optical telescopes.

The Position

Based within the Advanced Instrumentation & Technology Centre (AITC), the Adaptive Optics R&D Software Engineer plays a major role in the development of the real-time computing hub at the AITC. The main responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

• performing software engineering work requiring individual judgment and initiative in the application of best-practice software engineering techniques and methods;
• participating in engineering studies and the evaluation of systems, designs and novel concepts, and delivering outcomes within financial and project planning estimates;
• participating in the manufacture and integration of (elements of) instruments and systems;
• providing specialist technical advice to a variety of stakeholders;
• providing coding and performance tuning of critical software blocks in the AO pipeline, and develop software that meets the specific requirements of external customers; and
• maintaining the School’s existing production software for supporting the School’s research program.

The Person

To excel in this role you will have:

• eligibility for Corporate membership of Engineers Australia plus post-graduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education/training
• extensive knowledge of, and experience with, the design, production and testing of software systems in a scientific/technical environment, including experience in astronomical adaptive optics software research and/or instrumentation
• extensive experience with object oriented software development methodologies with language experience including C/C++ development, Python 2 & 3 experience and CUDA runtime, driver APIs and in developing software for Adaptive Optics systems on large astronomical telescopes, with real-time data acquisition systems, including custom FPGA based interfaces.
• experience developing software systems in a multi-threaded heterogeneous distributed environment
• a demonstrated ability to solve problems and follow technical and project management protocols
