ASIS is Australia’s overseas secret intelligence collection agency. Its mission is to protect and promote
Australia’s vital interests through the provision of intelligence services as directed by the Government.
Its work can involve collecting intelligence relating to national security, international relations and
economic issues. It also contributes to Australia’s coordinated national efforts against terrorism,
proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and trans-national issues such as people smuggling.
ASIS employs people in a wide range of roles, which require dynamic team players who enjoy working
with stakeholders, team members and individually on projects. ASIS is looking for technologists who will
be able to meet tight deadlines and work to support ASIS priorities. Sucessful candidates will have highly
developed technical skills in their chosen discipline. Technical specialists are expected to mentor junior
staff and contribute to the ongoing development of skills for ASIS’s technical workforce. Relevant tertiary
qualifications will be highly regarded.

Roles
We are seeking experienced and creative software developers/engineers that can develop and apply
innovative technical solutions to solve a wide range of foreign intelligence collection challenges. As an
ASIS software developer/engineer you can expect to lead and support multi-disciplinary software teams
working to fill a diverse range of continually evolving capabilities. Your role could encompass all stages
of capability development including; stakeholder engagement, research, design, prototyping,
development, testing and implementation of solutions.
Software Developer/Engineer – EL1 Technical Specialist
We are looking for knowledgeable IT professionals with:
Experience with Java, Angular, React, C, C++, C#, .NET, Python, Kotlin and designing APIs.
Familiarity with containerisation and DevOps tools including Docker, Rancher, Jenkins and
Kubernetes.
Experience with Mongo DB, Elastic Search and NIFI would be an advantage in this role.
Familiarity with Linux administration, experience developing web and mobile applications and/or
experience with cloud technologies and communication networks will be highly regarded.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks
Outlined below are the key areas of responsibility for an EL1 Technical Specialist:
Software development and support, which may include the following:
o Technical requirements analysis, design and suitability assessments;
o Design and development from prototype to production; and,
o Testing, deployment, quality assurance and support of complex systems.
Lead development or support activities within a team environment involving:
o Reviewing or completing design and build documentation;
o Adhering to coding standards, change management and quality control processes; and,
o Use of monitoring and management tools for performance, availability and capacity
planning.
Provide subject matter expertise to team members and advice to senior management and other
staff in the development of new capabilities.
Senior Software Developer/Engineer – EL2 Technical Specialist
We are looking for senior IT professionals with:
Extensive experience (10+) years in software development/engineering in a multidisciplinary
team, working in complex enterprise IT environments.
Expertise in containerisation, CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tools including Docker, Rancher,
Jenkins and Kubernetes.
Full-stack development expertise across a variety of languages and frameworks.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks
Outlined below are the key areas of responsibility for an EL2 Technical Specialist:
Software development and support, which may include the following:
o Lead the development, design and implementation of new applications and changes to
existing systems, including managing roadmaps for key systems/applications; and,
o Leverage your extensive technical expertise to deliver fit-for-purpose solutions that are
maintainable and scalable.
Provide technical leadership and advice within a team environment involving:
o Develop and oversee best practice coding, testing and deployment methods and tools;
o Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation, identify risks and gaps with
current systems; and,
o Advise on performance, availability and capacity improvements, and undertake complex
troubleshooting, investigation and issue resolution.
Proactively share knowledge and expertise as a subject matter expert, provide strategic advice
to senior management, and provide assistance and mentorship to less experienced colleagues.
About You
You are passionate about technology, self-motivated, collaborative and enjoy delivering quality software.
You are curious, a problem-solver and interested in new technologies, keeping up to date with industry
developments, mentoring junior developers and have experience working with agile teams.
You will demonstrate an ability to:
Adapt and develop with new technologies;
Develop, integrate, optimise and troubleshoot complex software systems in an enterprise
environment;
Use secure coding practices; and,
Work in a multidisciplinary development team.
Technical Capability/Education/Qualifications/Experience
The following education, qualifications and/or experience will be highly regarded:
Bachelor in Software Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, Information
Systems/Technology, Business Information Systems and/or other recognised industry or
tertiary qualifications.
Demonstrated experience commensurate with level applied for in a software
development/engineering role.
