Job Description
Polymer Development Scientist
OVERVIEW:
This role is for a hands-on applied research & development chemical engineer or related discipline with primary responsibilities in technology advancement, product development, and scale-up of acrylic based materials. The position emphasizes product development and scale-up related to acrylic polymerization, chemical kinetics, mass and energy transfer phenomena, polymer modification leading to commercial scale-up. Experience in photopolymerization and photomechanics is considered a plus but not a requirement.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary responsibility of this role is in creating and identifying critical focus areas related to product development and scale-up of emerging technology. This includes defining application space to select appropriate materials, creating representative product prototypes, and ultimately identifying focus areas of research required to complete successful scale up.
Liaise with product managers to create performance space maps of key commercial segments to be in line with product portfolio gaps and strategies.
Develop project plans and manage projects based on performance requirement maps for prioritized commercial segments inclusive of determining resources, actions and timelines. In addition, provide critical assessment of probability of technical success to support decisions to continue or terminate the project.
Conduct hands-on polymerizations of adhesives or coatings via multiple free radical mechanisms including; thermal, actinic radiation, controlled architecture and associated polymer/adhesive characterizations. Supervise and coach technician and lab support colleagues.
Patent liaison work with corporate counsel regarding right to market, patent applications and office actions. Assist other chemists in patent activities and filings.
Build and expand core energy cure technology through careful study of the literature, new scientific discovery, external development and development of intellectual property.
Transfer knowledge to fellow scientists via presentations, technical reports and day-to-day interaction. Train and coach junior colleagues in the theory and application of conventional and new polymerization technology.
Actively participate in process safety management and employee safety programs. Help drive continuous improvement via inputs into raw material selection and process modifications.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Technical
PhD in chemical engineering or related discipline. BS/MS will be considered with demonstrated commercial success in acrylic polymerization, polymer design, and general synthesis leading to successful commercial scale-up and product launches
Thorough knowledge of acrylic polymerization fundamentals, polymer processing, and detailed analytical and rheological characterization with preference toward pressure sensitive adhesives.
Demonstrated track record of implementing creative and innovative technologies.
Demonstrated knowledge in using statistical design of experiments.
Synthesis and formulation experience in complementary chemistries and technologies such as urethanes, silicones, epoxies, hot melts and radiation curing is considered a plus.
Industry Experience
2+ years R&D experience in acrylic polymerization, acrylic pressure sensitive industry a plus.
Experience in industrial product development using energy cured technology is preferred but not required.
Experience in industrial PSA‘s application is preferred but not required.
Interpersonal Skills
Effective technical writing ability.
Effective verbal & written communication skills.
Well-developed time management skills with the ability to work on and/or lead multiple projects simultaneously.
Proven track record of leading multi-functional teams comprised of R&D, Operations, Legal, and Commercial/Customer personnel.
Ability to foster creativity/innovation while ensuring project progress and lab productivity
