BBC Look North is the most watched news programme for the North East and Cumbria on BBC 1. We are creative, on top of the daily news agenda and have a stunning record in delivering ambitious outside broadcasts for big regional moments. We cover one of the most diverse areas of the country, from fascinating and beautiful rural areas such as Northumberland and The Lake District, to major conurbations such as Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Carlisle. Our broadcast area is far reaching, serving from North Yorkshire up to the Scottish border and over to West Cumbria. We are also proud of the way in which Look North collaborates with other parts of the BBC, making projects come alive for our audience.
This is a key role within the TV and online management team and is vital to the smooth running of the centre’s operations, studio and live resources. BBC Look North is going through huge change at the moment. The newsroom is undergoing major investment turning it into a modern news environment and we will soon have a new gallery system (IGS) in place and a new studio to come in the near future. The Assistant Editor (Technical) will be responsible for leading and managing our highly skilled and creative operations staff, working with production, editorial and technology colleagues to enable programme makers to fulfil their creative ambitions in the most cost-effective way. We want to attract, develop and retain the best craft talent and bring fresh perspectives and new ideas to the way we work.
As a member of the BBC North East & Cumbria TV and Online leadership team, this role will be pivotal in promoting a creative, diverse and inclusive culture and helping work in a newsroom that is delivering on all platforms. The role combines operational tasks with management and involves standing in for the editor where appropriate. You’ll be resilient, lead by example and be a visible leader.
The Assistant Editor (Technical) is the main point of contact for all things operational but will also delegate tasks to the Operations Managers and the wider operational team.
The successful candidate will be expected to live within the editorial area and be contactable out-of-hours to support breaking news deployments or other urgent issues which may arise.
