The Own It App & website is a wellbeing product aimed at young people receiving their very first smartphone and entering a personal digital world. Using a unique combination of self-reporting and machine learning the technology assists children in making good choices and intervenes when potentially harmful situations are encountered. Engaging, short, snack-able content is served to the audience via a daily feed or delivered as an intervention to help guide young people’s behaviour in the right direction.

The Own It App and website is in line with the overall aims of Education as a department, which are to:

• Provide every child in the UK with a personalised learning experience through BBC Bitesize;

• Support & inspire classroom learning with world-class, curriculum linked programming; through BBC Teach;

• Address societal and educational deficits within the UK through campaigns, such as Tiny Happy People and Regenerators.

Main Responsibilities

As part of the Own It the team, the journalists use their editorial judgement to create a range of content in a range of formats for Own It’s app and web platforms in line with the brand’s editorial strategy, including writing, shooting and editing content. You will generate ideas for high-profile content campaigns and work to deliver those campaigns in collaboration with a range of internal and external partners. You will build relationships with other teams and work closely with other departments, including Newsround and the wider Children’s & Education team and identify opportunities within the news agenda to create associated content and resources for the Own It app and / or website.

Are you the right candidate?

You will be experienced at creating digital content for young audiences and be able to manage multiple pieces of work at one time. You will have experience of using a range of video, audio and digital equipment to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver content and must be able to use a variety of tools to produce and edit interactive digital content including Photoshop and Premiere, as well as familiarity of working with a CMS to publish content.

You will be confident at managing film commissions for web and social media, working with indies on casting/scripting/edit feedback.

You should have an awareness of the range of issues that face children in the digital environment and an understanding of children’s digital wellbeing.

Desirable to have a working knowledge of optimising digital content for search (SEO)
