Job Summary
Functions as a Radio Frequency (RF) Engineering technical specialist in a lead role and/or as RF Engineering team supervisor. Independently develops and applies advanced engineering techniques, concepts, and approaches to identify appropriate engineering solutions for a variety of engineering problems. Typical engineering solutions include; spectrum strategy and implementation, radio technology evaluation, client network evaluation, site surveys, path surveys, equipment request for proposal management and evaluation, radio frequency design, radio site design, passive intermodulation analysis, construction planning and support, construction acceptance, network troubleshooting, migration planning, radio network commissioning as well as other turn-key wireless network services clients may request. Supported technologies may include; LTE/5G, narrowband radio, wideband radio, VHF/UHF, Land Mobile Radio (LMR), Automatic Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Microwave, in-building, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) and others as required by our clients The successful candidate may supervise engineering staff on projects of medium to high complexity or serve as a technical specialist providing knowledge and expertise.
Key Responsibilities
Supervise staff on several medium to large projects
Lead project meetings and make presentations
Routinely interact with clients to identify needs and requirements
Responsible for Radio Frequency (RF) engineering design and optimization
Responsible for specifying equipment, creating design drawings and layouts, and identifying appropriate frequency bands
Research existing client conditions and make recommendations to enhance large, complex telecommunication networks, owned and operated by private entities such as water and power utilities, educational institutions, and public safety agencies
Present complex technical data to audiences with non-technical backgrounds
Responsible for all engineering aspects of a large turn key wireless network deployment including the following:
RF propagation estimates using EDX and/or Planet
Network diagrams
Document customer requirements, design criteria, specifications
Document MOPs (Methods of Procedures) for Link Validation Testing, Equipment Installation and End-to-End System Testing and Acceptance
Produce project plans for new proposals, including proposal engineering approach writeup, staffing plans and engineering level of effort estimates.
Maintain records, lists and reports as required to ensure compliance with the client’s schedule, accuracy of the budget, and adherence to procurement specifications.
Keep informed about latest spectrum and wireless network technology advancements in both narrowband and wideband platforms including LTE, 5G, Wi-Max, CBRS and other proprietary vendor protocols.
Keep informed about the actions of the various standards bodies governing the wireless industry including IEEE and 3GPP.
Represent the organization and maintain connections within the industry and related organizations.
Management Responsibilities
Supervises work of others. Responsible for hiring, discipline, and pay administration of their subordinates.
Preferred Qualifications
Typically a minimum of 10 years related work experience. Bachelor’s degree in engineering technology or sciences preferred or any other degree, specialized training, or experience, that makes the individual uniquely qualified to perform the job responsibilities. Industry recognized credentials preferred as needed.
10 years of RF engineering experience in telecommunications industry
3 years of RF design experience with at least one RF Planning tool such as Planet, EDX, Atoll, CelPlan
4 years of wireless network deployment experience
5 years of engineering experience in design of communication projects for Utilities or Public Safety or carrier networks.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excelling report, specification, and requirement document writing skills
Experience preparing cost, schedule, and resource estimates and writing requests for proposals as well as responses to RFP’s.
Demonstrated experience with a network design methodology that includes: Requirements, Conceptual Design, Specified Design and Node (physical implementation) Design.
Broad technical knowledge of FCC regulations and industry trends
Visibility to trending technology and ability to provide planning for our clients.
Capable of creating telecommunication master plans for our clients
Ability to perform and coordinate all stages of RF wireless network design
Ability to delegate effectively while maintaining expert knowledge of subject matter
Ability to effectivity manage experienced highly technical engineering staff
Experience creating design drawings including interconnection diagrams and schematics
Able to create and edit design and construction specifications.
Registered Professional Engineer in at least one of 50 USA States
Familiar with multiple wireless network system architectures, dispatching considerations, antenna and feedline selection, coverage test methods.
Microwave system design experience: link budgets, site evaluation, path feasibility evaluation, on-site path studies, specification of equipment, antennas, feedlines, and diversity measures.
Familiar with lightning protection and EMI prevention: Bonding, grounding, design and installation of GPR and surge protection equipment
Working knowledge of Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN) and VoIP networks.
Knowledge of the design, installation and provision a wide range of mission critical WANs/MANs/LANS and equipment – DWDM, SONET, Ethernet, MPLS, OTN, or other Carrier class networks.
Installation and troubleshooting any or all the above in the field
Cisco Certifications such as CCIE for Routing and Switching or Wireless
Minimum Qualifications
