We are seeking a talented and efficient Scientist in Sequencing Research and Genomics group. The position is located in San Diego. The successful candidate should have strong skills of developing and delivering high quality, high volume informatics operations with a solid understanding of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) operations. The candidate will be expected to interact with other teams such as Computational Genomics team, IT, data managers, Bioinformaticians and Biology Scientists from various Thematic Research Centers (TRC’s) and Support Groups. The scope of work will involve working with internal project stakeholders as well as external NGS vendors ensuring accurate and timely data delivery. An outstanding Scientist should be able to track and maintain data flow after sequencing completion through bioinformatics pipeline processing of data, identify any issues and ensure that they are resolved promptly. Documenting and maintaining production pipeline workflows and troubleshooting the pipeline execution steps.
This position requires a background in bioinformatics, computational biology or related field of life sciences research and 2-5 years of direct experience in NGS field and 2-5 years of experience managing projects and a group. Experience in pharmaceutical industry is a plus.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Primarily responsible for tracking high quality NGS sequencing data post sequencing through bioinformatics pipeline processing and delivering to analysis team.
Coordinate with vendor to verify proper data format and correct file names are generated and transferred into BMS internal portals.
Metadata collection and transfer.
Exporting data through internal portals and execution of bioinformatics production pipelines.
Working closely with Computational Genomics team for bioinformatics pipeline management.
Documenting and maintaining documentation for bioinformatics pipeline management.
Working with procurement, IT, bioinformatics, and others to enable and facilitate data transfer from new vendors
Working with NGS teams across various BMS genomic sites for NGS data processing.
Collecting and presenting quality metrics for various processes.
Innovate ways to increase efficiencies and improve quality of NGS data output.
Excellent time management and organizational skill with attention to details
Self-motivated, strong communication skills, both written and oral. Strong ability to work in a fast-paced environment is essential. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability for creative thinking and problem solving.
Skills/Knowledge Required:
Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline with at least 4 years of work experience or master’s degree with at least 2 year of work experience.
Functional/Scientific/Technical Skills:
Excellent communication skills with previous success in 3rd party engagements, to deliver high quality and value in complex scientific research objectives.
Using genomics knowledge to troubleshoot various scenarios that can come up during the course of NGS data transfer and bioinformatics pipeline execution.
Support and troubleshoot data transfers and QC’ing of NGS files.
Experience in vendor management, and bioinformatics scripting.
Working knowledge with various project management tools like JIRA and Confluence
Additional Responsibilities:
Work closely with Data Sciences and Computational Genomics team to implement standardization of processes, meta-data collection and data organization.
Implement best practices across NGS genomics teams e.g. sequencing lab, Database management, Bioinformatics and Predictive Sciences
Monitor processes and ensure that those responsible are informed of their effectiveness, advocate for and contribute to the success of change/ process improvements when warranted.
Support the development and use of performance metrics to create a culture of continuous improvement.
Ensure smooth day-to-day operation of Sequencing Operations team to facilitate teamwork, positive team dynamics and maximize team output operations
