Location:
Cregoran service is a community-based day and residential service in the environs of Galway City. Cregoran provides individualised services, centre and community based day Services, and a variety of residential and respite services to adults with high support needs, based on personal outcome measures.
Our focus is to form genuine relationships and partnerships with each person supported and their family, to support people to be valued citizens in their local community and to have ordinary life experiences. We work to create opportunities for people who use our service to have valued social roles in their local communities and to have the chance to form real friendships.
The Role:
The Social Care Worker will report to the Team Leader, and will fulfil a key worker role for individuals identified. We aim to provide a safe, secure environment where individuals participate in local community and leisure activities, make choices and enjoy a lifestyle that fulfils their potential and expectations, with the opportunity for engaging in new experiences.

The Social Care Worker will also be expected to stand in for the Social Care Leader in their absence, and also be capable of assuming the role of senior person on duty on a scheduled basis, offering a point of contact, advice and support for the wider Cregoran Service at evening and weekends. The successful candidate will initially be assigned to work in a community house within Cregoran Service’s; however this work location may change depending on service needs.

Qualifications/Experience/Skills:
Candidates must have a HETAC/DIT/NQAI BA in Applied Social Studies/Social Care
Open Training College (HETAC) accredited National Degree in Applied Social Studies (Disability).
Candidates should have a minimum of 2 year’s experience of working with people with an intellectual disability. Experience of working with persons with behaviour’s that challenge is an essential requirement.
Experience in the area of goal setting and programme implementation is also essential. Previous experience of shift leadership is highly desirable.
A full clean Driving Licence (Class B) is essential for the appointee to drive the transport that is assigned to the Service.
Fluency in verbal and written English and IT skills is an essential requirement of this post.

Working Hours:
78 hours per fortnight based on a 14 day duty roster. The successful candidate will be required to work days, evenings, weekends, public holidays, nights and/or sleepovers as required, to meet service needs. Agreed allowances are paid in respect of hours of work as appropriate.

Annual Leave:
22 days per annum.
Remuneration:
Department of Health Social Care Worker salary scale (01/03/2023) – €36,195 x 10 increments – €50,978 (max of scale) per annum. LSI €51,941 per annum is payable after 3 Years on the maximum of the scale.
Tenure:
Permanent full-time and pensionable and Temporary full-time and pensionable.
Probation:
A probationary period of nine months from the date of appointment applies to the post. The employment may be terminated at any time during the probationary period should the employer find that the appointee is unsuitable to continue employment. The probation period may be extended at the Employer’s discretion.
JOB DESCRIPTION

Specific Conditions:
Staff must have a positive attitude towards working with persons with an intellectual disability and help to ensure that they lead as normal and enjoyable a life as possible.
Staff must treat each person with an intellectual disability as an individual and at all times acknowledge and respect the rights and personal dignity of the person with a learning disability.
Staff are required to establish and maintain relationships with the people that they support that are based on respect and equality and that promote their independence.
Staff are expected to network with local community groups and develop positive links for the individuals who use the service.
Main duties and functions:
Be an active member of the team to which you are assigned.
Develop positive relationships with individuals.
Take overall responsibility in the absence of the Team Leader, for the day to day management of the community home and the service delivered.
Assist people supported with personal banking and adhering to the National Guidelines on managing individual finances.
Provide support and supervision to colleagues, and supervise the performance of staff assigned to the group home including responsibility for timekeeping, attendance and planning annual leave, IPP’s checking of personal profiles and all aspects of their work.
Motivate and work with staff to ensure high standards of work practices within the Service.
Work closely with all staff and support each staff member in their role as key-worker.
Identify issues arising within the house and ensure these are communicated promptly to the Team Leader/Service Coordinator.
In conjunction with the Team Leader, identify both individual and team training needs, and take part in training courses as required.
Monitor expenditure of the group home through careful management and close monitoring of rosters, relief staff management, annual leave, sick leave, etc
Maintain records with respect to people who use the service, staff, finances, and purchasing as are required.
Develop positive relationships with the people supported and assist them in making informed decisions.
Ensure that the care and training of all individuals is of the highest professional standard using Individual Personal Outcome Plans and a Key Worker system.
Advocate for the individuals in all aspects of life by developing a good working relationship with the family and others involved with them.
Support and facilitate individuals in community participation, integration and the development of their independence.
Ensure the Service is operating in line with the Health Information and Quality Authority Regulations & Standards (HIQA).
Develop standards in line with HIQA and take responsibility for improving the quality, safety and value of health and social care of individuals.
Support individuals in recreational and social activities in the evenings and at weekends.
Be willing to participate in all training and recreational activities including taking residents on outings, swimming, and holidays as arranged.
Assist individuals in making informed decisions.
Support individuals in developing and maintaining friendships and other relationships.
Support individuals in exercising their rights and managing their finances.
Assist the individuals in accessing public services such as medical services, public transport, and so on.
Help individuals to achieve personal goals and choices with regard to employment, home environment and leisure activities.
Assist individuals in maintaining good health, receiving appropriate healthcare and maintaining good personal hygiene.
Support the individuals with their personal care and activities of daily living
Carry out regular positive behavioural programming reviews and set goals for improvement
Assist the people supported in developing and maintaining housekeeping skills and maintaining a clean home.
Ensure the group home and grounds are maintained to a high standard of cleanliness and décor.
Take responsibility for arranging routine maintenance of the group home and transport associated with it.
Assist individuals in menu planning and preparation of food, cook their daily meals and maintain a high standard of food hygiene.
Administer medication when necessary in line with the Services’ Medication Administration and Management Policy (S.A.M.S.) and supervise and carry out medication audits as per medication policy.
Take responsibility for the supply, storage, stock and of medications in accordance with the policy of the Service.
Be familiar with the use of technology and embrace its use to promote the interests of people supported.
Drive the service vehicle when required.
Avail of all training and development opportunities that enhance this position.
Maintain records with respect to individuals, finances, purchasing and human resources as are required.
Ensure confidentiality is maintained in all matters concerning people supported including the safe storage of reports and records.
Ensure that all accidents/incidents to individuals, staff and visitors are reported promptly in accordance with Service policy through the AIRS database.
Operate within the policies and procedures of the Service in all aspects of your work.
Promote dignity at work and show respect to individuals, colleagues and stakeholders in the course of duty.
Be aware of and become familiar with fire drill procedures within the work place, i.e. fire detection, evacuation and fire fighting.
Be conscious of Health & Safety matters in the workplace and, in particular, to comply with employees’ obligations as set out under Section 9 of the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Act, 2005.
As the duties and responsibilities of any post in the Service are likely to change with the ongoing needs of the people who use the service, i.e. age, level of disability, etc staff are expected to have a high level of flexibility, willingness and an ability to develop new approaches to their work as the people who use the service needs demand.
Perform such other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned by the Social Care Leader/ Service coordinator. All duties must be carried out in person at all times.
The role of the post holder will not be limited by reference to this job description. It would be expected that the role will evolve as professional, structural and Individuals demands change and the post holder will be expected to demonstrate flexibility skills that will facilitate this.
