POSITION: Telephone Operator – Temporary SALARY: $38,039- $43,572 LOCATION: Human Resources Department, 719 City Hall, Buffalo, NY 14202

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS Incumbents to positions in this class operate a telephone switchboard or an answering console in order to complete telephone calls – both internal and external. Positions are characterized by the operation of a digital centrex system handling numerous telephone calls requiring a high degree of courtesy and customer service to telephone users. Although the operation of the telephone equipment may occupy as little as fifty (50) percent of the work performed, the operator when performing other tasks must remain near this equipment. The duties of positions in this class are comparable to those of an entrance level Clerk. Work is performed in accordance with prescribed routine that may be carried out without immediate supervision. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES Operates a digital centrex system to maintain internal and external lines of telephonic communication; -answers telephone calls and determines nature of service required; -provides callers with directory information and other data following specific agency guidelines and procedures; -makes telephone connection to the appropriate office; Maintains an up-to-date informational file on telephone numbers, personnel, work locations and restricted and confidential numbers; -compiles and records information to be used in preparation and publication of directories and charts; -makes appropriate changes in records when changes in personnel and/or numbers occur and notifies appropriate personnel; May operate a departmental/unit telephone paging system; May be required to perform duties involving the input/retrieval of data on a computer terminal; May be required to scan, file and maintain records and other documents -checks for clerical accuracy and completeness; – opens, dates, sorts, distributes and files mail; May operate copy machines, microfilm, simple computing and other office machines; Acts as a Receptionist for department; Performs related work as required. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Working knowledge of telecommunications procedures governing the use of telephone equipment; Working knowledge of agency procedures governing telephone callers; Working knowledge of procedures governing the operation of a modern console or digital centrex system; Working knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; Working knowledge of spelling and English; Ability to speak clearly and intelligibly in a pleasant manner; Ability to digitally or manually manipulate a modern console; Ability to learn to operate various types of telephone paging equipment; Ability to be trained on a computer terminal for the input/output of data; Able to understand and follow oral and written directions; Ability to de-escalate irate callers; Ability to exemplify excellent customer service; Able to write legibly; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the positions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Graduation from High School, GED or Equivalency Diploma and ONE YEAR of full time experience in the operation of a modern console, digital centrex system, telephone switchboard or telephone console.
