Located in Bethpage, St. Joseph Hospital that provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient medical, critical care and surgical services. Its Emergency Department cares for approximately 33,000 patients a year. Other vital services include an Ambulatory Surgery Unit, The Center for Sleep Medicine, Hyperbaric and Wound Healing Center, CH Cancer Center, The Center for Speech and Swallowing Disorders, Diabetes Education Center and a full scope of outpatient radiology services, including Cardiac CT. Responsibilities: The Surgical Technician works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse in delivering safe and effective care to patients in the intraoperative period. Assists the RN in planning patient care by appropriately selecting supplies and equipment needed for cases. Checks that instrumentation and equipment are in working order. Maintains aseptic technique throughout set up and surgical intervention. Shows awareness of patient condition and special needs. Anticipates surgeons’ needs during intraoperative phase. Maintains patient safety by adhering to fire prevention strategies. Maintains patients safety by adhering to safe medication handling strategies. Maintains patients safety by adhering to safe medication handling strategies. Communicates equipment/instrumentation issues to the appropriate personnel (CSS, Materials Manager, AHN, Director). Performs “down time” assignments (checking outdates, stocking, rooms, picking cases, etc.). Performs counts according to hospital policy. Initiates appropriate procedure for incorrect counts. Correctly handles and identifies surgical specimens. Safely disposes of biohazardous material. Actively participates in room turnover between cases. Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent required; Completion of accredited surgical technician program required New York State Surgical Technician Certification required. BLS from American Heart Association required. Prior surgical technician experience preferred. Must be computer-literate. Must be able to read and write basic English.
