CGD Europe, an independent, non-partisan research organization seeks a full-time Senior Research Associate for a fixed-term position (with potential to extend) with its global education program, to be based in either its London or DC offices.

The purpose of the role is to support CGD Europe to deliver on the objectives of its global education program. The senior research associate will undertake new mainly quantitative research, related to the themes of the education program, and will contribute to building research and policy outreach collaborations with institutions based in low and middle income countries. Possible areas of research include girls’ education, school violence, early childhood development, and foundational learning.

The successful candidate will have experience with research and policy analysis in economics, education, public policy, political science or a related field. The candidate must demonstrate outstanding analytical skills, both in academic research and applied policy analysis.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct background research on and co-author working papers, under the direction of the co-directors and senior fellows
• Identify areas for research and analysis
• Conduct desk-based primary research under the guidance of the co-directors
• Build and manage collaborative research projects with research institutions based in Africa and/or South Asia; identify possible experimental research topics and co-author research and policy products
• Build relationships with country partners to help support the formation of a network of global education researchers
• Write blogs and policy briefs for the global education program
• Supervise research assistants as needed
• Perform other duties as necessary

Essential qualifications, experience and skills for this role:

• Significant experience in a university, research institution, think tank or equivalent
• Research and data analysis skills using Stata, Tableau and/or R
• Outstanding attention to detail; proven ability to advance research projects with hands-off supervision while being accountable for the accuracy of outputs
• Strong communication and writing skills, including the ability to communicate complex messages to a wide audience
• Willingness to undertake short- and long-haul travel
• Confidence, flexibility, can-do attitude, and intellectual curiosity in a demanding and fast-paced environment

Desirable qualifications, experience and skills:

• A PhD, master’s or equivalent in economics
• Prior experience conducting research in a low or middle income country context, or education policy experience gained in low or middle income countries
