The Children’s Cancer Institute’s sole mission is to put an end to the devastating impact of childhood cancer. To achieve this, CCI in conjunction with the Kids Cancer Centre lead the ZERO Childhood Cancer National Personalised Medicine Program (ZERO), which is Australia’s first and most comprehensive personalised medicine program for children and adolescents with cancer. ZERO is a unique, multidisciplinary program bringing together cutting-edge science, the latest technology, and the brightest minds in research and clinical care, it is on a path to change the model of care for children with cancer today. Having already demonstrated significant impact in improving the lives of children faced with the most challenging prognosis, the program is now in preparation to expand and grow to include all children with cancer by 2023.

We seek a software engineer who is passionate about bridging gaps and build an interface to integrate health and data management systems. To achieve this, you will work on web service design and development, API development, microservices, authentication, authorisation, data access, data storage and management. Knowledge of cancer genomics is not strictly necessary but a background in data harmonisation and management is. The right applicant will join a passionate team focused on delivering personalised medicine to kids with cancer in a rewarding environment. This project is managed in a highly collaborative way, with team members from CDC, LIMS and Data Analysis and Management System.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Interact with CDC, LIMS and DMS databases.
• Consume webservices and APIs offered by CDC, LIMS and DMS.
• Design and develop new web services and APIs to drive communication between upstream and downstream systems.
• Developing and adopting standards for user authentication.

• Engaging internal stakeholders such as software architects, computational biologists, molecular biologists, clinician-researchers and various research groups.
• A desire to continuously learn new technologies and bring innovative ideas into the team.

Qualifications, experience, and skills required:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or related field with at least 1 year relevant industry experience.

• Experience working with one or more programming languages Python, JAVA including Spring Boot and Perl
• Experience working with one or more databases Oracle, MySQL, MSSQL and Mongodb
• Strong understanding of data modelling, data structures, databases and ETL processes
• Experience in designing, building and using APIs
• Experience in SOAP and REST-based web service development
• Excellent communication skills

Desirable

• Working knowledge of computational biology and/or bioinformatics
• Public contributions to open source projects or equivalent work experience

• Understanding of large-scale data sets, including both structured and unstructured data

• Familiar with container management systems (e.g. Kubernetes)
• Experience using development tools such as Git
• Experience designing and developing system integration solutions
• Knowledge of genomics
• Knowledge of clinical data, standards and harmonisation
