Te Puna o Waiwhetū Christchurch Art Gallery is looking for an exceptional individual to lead, motivate and develop the Gallery’s Learning and Audience Engagement team and lead the delivery of exceptional programmes for our audiences.

Responsibilities

This is a critical position at the Gallery, responsible for the strategic direction and content of our learning and audience engagement programmes, while managing associated budgets. The Gallery’s education programme for schools delivers curriculum-relevant art experiences in our exhibition spaces and education centre to more than 11,000 school children each year. Our vibrant audience engagement programme welcomes at least 22,000 visitors a year and includes all our public events, performances, gigs, talks, tours and volunteer guide programmes. The main elements of this role are to:

• Lead and manage a team of three people responsible for our education and public events programmes.
• Take a strategic planning approach to the programmes and advise on and contributing to programme delivery.
• Work collaboratively with all the teams within the Gallery to ensure that learning and audience engagement across is considered and integrated across the Gallery’s operations.
• Ensure that our public programmes reflect the diversity of our communities, with special consideration given to strengthening engagement with youth and Māori as key audiences.
• Support kaupapa Māori programming initiatives and continue to build capability and confidence within your team in relation to te reo Māori and tikaka Māori.
• Work with colleagues across the Ōtautahi cultural sector, creating exciting opportunities to work together for the benefit of the city.

To Be Successful In This Role You Will Have

• Love for and knowledge of the arts, particularly Aotearoa New Zealand visual arts.
• A desire and ability to engage our audiences, existing and new, in the Gallery and on social media, to the highest of sector standards and with high levels of motivation, energy and commitment to hard work.
• Proven people management and team leadership skills, with at least a couple of years’ experience leading, motivating and developing a team.
• Experience in a cultural or educational sector, ideally developing and delivering public programmes and events.
• A highly organised and adaptable way of working with the ability to excel under pressure, developing and implementing solutions to challenges.
• Exceptional communication skills including public speaking and the skills to work closely and productively with colleagues from different areas of expertise.
• The ability to understand, demonstrate and value the use of tikaka and te reo Māori within the workplace.
• Adept at managing administration, budgets, short- and medium-term planning and line management elements.
• A relevant degree (eg Bachelor of Arts) or equivalent industry work experience.

Hours of work – Full-time hours, with regular evening and weekend work Position – Permanent Location – This position is primarily based at Te Puna o Waiwhetū Christchurch Art Gallery, 58 Gloucester Street, Ōtautahi Christchurch Salary – The salary band for this position goes from $96,465 to $107,183 per annum based on a 40-hour week. Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
