City of Winnipeg Hiring For Tech Asst Entomology at Winnipeg, MB Full Time
Under the supervision of an Entomology Technician 1 or Entomology Technician 2, the Technical Assistant Entomology worker performs semi-technical work in the field of entomological research or insect pest management including surveying, collecting, identifying and preserving insect specimens. The Technical Assistant Entomology also responds to public inquiries concerning pest biology and control.
As the Technical Assistant Entomology you will:
- Survey, collect, identify, and preserve insect specimens under direction.
- Assist in the evaluation of insecticides and equipment using analytical equipment and methods both in the field and laboratory.
- Compile information from field notes maps and record forms as requested.
- Perform scientific literature searches as directed.
- Respond to public inquiries concerning pest biology and control as directed.
- Maintain assigned equipment and vehicles in accordance with branch protocol.
- Perform maintenance duties relating to branch grounds and facilities.
- Operate vehicles and equipment necessary for the control of urban pests as required.
- Dispatch staff using a two-way radio system.
- Record spraying activities using GPS mapping and database software.
Your education and qualifications include:
- Completion of a minimum one year in the biological sciences from a recognized university or technical college.
- Successful completion of additional courses and training as required by the Department, including but not limited to:
- Manitoba Pesticide Applicators Licence (Landscape/Golf Course, Structural)
- Ability to safely handle, mix and apply insecticides.
- Knowledge of insect identification would be an asset.
- Familiarity with city streets and locations and the ability to navigate through city streets.
- Ability to understand, execute and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public.
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precaution policies and regulations.
Conditions of employment:
- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Must possess and maintain a valid class 5 Manitoba Driver’s Licence.
- Successful candidates will be required to provide a valid Notice of Driver’s Licence in Force letter.
- In accordance with Legislative or the Department’s requirements position require possession of valid licences, certification, or completion of courses as appropriate before appointment:
- Valid Manitoba Pesticide Applicators Licence (Core and Mosquito)
- Must be able to work various shifts including evenings, weekends, extended hours and/or holidays at both locations, as needed.
- Must be capable of working at various heights; working outdoors in potentially extreme weather conditions; the ability to stand and walk for extended periods and over uneven terrain including: snow, ice and riverbanks, and the ability to work overhead and at heights for extended periods.
