Seasonal Natural Resource/Dark Skies Technician
Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Resource Stewardship Program is seeking to fill a seasonal biologist position. The Resource Stewardship Program is responsible for biological and cultural resource inventory, monitoring and management planning on Colorado State Parks. Primary duties include biological field surveys, supporting citizen science projects, research and implementation of Dark Skies programming at state parks. This 40 hour per week position is split between field based biological surveys, mentoring and training of volunteers, and the coordination of natural resource projects from our Grand Junction location. This position provides a great entrance into the working worlds of conservation biology, public land management, citizen science, and GIS in the beautiful state of Colorado.
DUTIES:
Responsibilities primarily involve biological field surveys, supporting the raptor monitoring citizen science program along the Front Range, leading research and implementation of the Dark Skies program, research on natural resource management issues, data management, plan writing and cartography. Work skills that are acquired through this work include tablet computer mapping in Colorado’s state parks using ESRI Field Maps (ArcCollector), volunteer management, GIS analysis, threatened & endangered species management, production of training & education materials, and administrative duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SUBSTITUTIONS, CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT & APPEAL RIGHTS:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Applicant should have a background in ecology, wildlife, botany, natural resources, volunteer management, GIS or other natural resource sciences; as well as be proficient with Microsoft Office applications. Proficiency with ESRI GIS products is preferred. Experience with ArcCollector for ArcGIS is very helpful. Good organizational skills, good written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work with autonomy are required.
An ideal candidate will have:
Knowledge of wildlife and vegetation known to inhabit Colorado and experience with wildlife and/or vegetation sampling techniques.
Experience with or an understanding of Dark Skies programming.
Experience with ArcGIS software applications, the ability to manage and manipulate data, and experience using cartography to communicate resource management issues and goals.
Experience working with, managing, and training volunteers.
Understanding of recreation, natural resource and public land management principles and an understanding of how natural sciences relate to land management.
Experience maintaining/populating databases.
Strong work ethic, be organized and have the ability to work in a fast paced setting both independently and on teams.
Ability to communicate information clearly and concisely, develop reports and present information both orally and in writing.
Experience with or willingness to perform some overnight field work across Colorado in all seasons.
Must have (or obtain) a Colorado Driver’s license.

Currently, temporary employees of the state of Colorado are not eligible for health benefits. Employees are eligible to contribute to a 401k program and the state PERA retirement fund.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Effective September 20, 2021, employees will be required to attest to and verify that they are fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Employees who have not been fully vaccinated will be required to submit to twice-weekly serial testing. Testing details will be provided during the onboarding process. Upon hire, new employees will have three (3) business days to provide attestation to their status with proof of vaccination, or begin twice-weekly serial testing for COVID-19. Testing will be considered paid work time. Note: Fully Vaccinated means two (2) weeks after a second dose in a two-dose series of the COVID-19 vaccine, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or two (2) weeks after the single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine, as defined by the State of Colorado’s Public Health Order and guidance issued by the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment.
