We are seeking an experienced, creative and adaptable software engineer to join the team, to build elegant solutions to unsolved problems, to take ownership of their area, and to learn and grow to their full potential. Our team is in high demand from both CSIRO-internal and from external clients, so we have an immediate need to grow the team.

The Terria team is a part of the Engineering & Design programme in Data61, where you will get to experiment with different solutions to problems all the time. You will have the freedom to come up with your own solutions to problems while justifying your decisions. As a member of the Terria team you will work on the open source TerriaJS library itself – our Cesium/WebGL 3D based geospatial visualisation software – as well as projects using TerriaJS such as the NationalMap, National Drought Map, Pacific Map, Digital Earth Australia and Africa, GEOGLAM RAPP Map, and our award winning Digital Twins.

We code mostly in JavaScript / TypeScript, but sometimes we also use shell scripting among other languages and tools, when they are the right technologies to use for the job. Your duties will include:

• Help lead, develop, maintain, and operate the systems developed by the Terria team.
• Take responsibility of managing priorities and resources in order to deliver significant software features.
• Make use of appropriate software development tools and processes for coding efficiency and for ensuring software quality, maintainability and reusability.
• Collaborate effectively with engineering, research, UI/UX and business teams.
• Help build our open source community by answering questions, writing documentation, and presenting at conferences.

Salary: AU$100k – AU$108k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

• Core TerriaJS development skills (web development, TypeScript, React), minimum 3 years.
• Minimum 2 years 2D geospatial (GIS) expertise.
• 3D and 4D geospatial skills, in particular using FME software, and 3D open data formats including IFC, 3DTiles, i3S for BIM, Utilities, Imagery, DEM, and proprietary equivalents.
• Experience with:
  • Leaflet
  • MapBoxGL
  • DeckGL
  • QGIS
  • Turf.js
  • PDAL
  • GDAL
  • GeoServer
  • NetCDF
• Google Cloud experience.
• Experience with YourDataYourRegions/geospatial machine learning technology.
• Vector data development.
• Proven production software experience including in use by the public.

Eligibility

To be eligible to work in CSIRO you must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or either hold, or be able to obtain, a valid working visa.
