We are seeking a talented and driven Software Engineer to work as a key member of the Marine Systems Modelling & Informatics research group within CSIRO Oceans & Atmosphere (O&A) business unit, and contribute to the large-scale multidisciplinary sciences that inform the use and conservation of Australia’s marine environments.

You will be part of a dynamic team that provides scientific & technical knowledge and support to industries, society, and authorities responsible for the sustainable management and use of Australian biodiversity and national & international fisheries. This includes developing tools to advise solutions that support the sustainability of Australia’s coastal and marine resources. The Software Engineer role will see you providing critical software development and support across a diverse research portfolio, which ranges from fisheries management & climate change through to the Great Barrier Reef & the southern oceans. Your role will have a day-to-day operational focus of developing and supporting software platforms, data processing pipelines & systems, web services & web tools to enable the efficient delivery of these research projects, and you will also have a client-focus working across server-side and client-side aspects of new & existing systems that delivers key services to end users.

Your duties will include:

• Assisting with the support, development, and application of existing software platforms for the delivery of environmental information and decision support.
• Contributing to the development and support of client and server-side data services and other web applications.
• Communicating project outcomes through documentation, demonstrations, and presentations.
• Communicating effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients, and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration, and enhancement of brand reputation.
• Working as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, to carry out tasks under limited direction in support of scientific research.
• At the more senior level, you will be also providing technical and/or project leadership, and coaching & training on activities pertaining to software development to ensure upskilling of staff.

Location: Hobart, Brisbane or Perth; Other locations may be negotiable

Salary: AU$87k to AU$111k pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

• A relevant degree and/or equivalent experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science or IT Systems Administration.
• Demonstrated experience in Software Engineering, including knowledge and experience in:
  • two or more programming languages such as Python, Java, Matlab, PHP or C++.
  • version control and code management.
• Proven excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to write technical documentation & training materials on the systems being developed and communicate technical aspects & outcomes to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability & willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches in support of scientific investigations.
• To be considered for the higher classification level, you will also need demonstrated leadership experience in providing mentoring, project and technical leadership.
