Job Summary
The Writing Centre is an integral part of a group of complementing Student Affairs departments supporting student success through skills development and advising support. The Centre teaches students to effectively express their thoughts, knowledge, and learning through writing. The Centre also acts as a resource for faculty who are teaching writing through disciplinary content and contexts. Reporting to the Lead Advisor, the International Student Writing Advisor tutors students in one-on-one sessions, group sessions, online modes of teaching delivery, and supplemental classes, with a special focus on international students/English for Non-Native Speakers of English. The International Student Writing Advisor assists in tutor training programming, supports the Writing Centre team with international student challenges, and fosters relationships with departments and faculty teaching these students. The International Student Writing Advisor also contributes to strategic programming initiatives focused on student writing development, retention and completion of degrees of international students.
Key Responsibilities
Tutor and advise students in one-on-one writing sessions focusing on international students.
Develop materials for one-on-one sessions (e.g., handouts), supplemental classes, presentations, and for use in the Writing Centre.
Implement strategies that address the varying strengths of our international student population using learning outcomes and other measurements to inform practice.
Assist in tutor training which includes the development of new training modules, observing and mentoring tutors, tutor assessment and evaluation.
Advise and support faculty and staff on writing issues and writing pedagogy through consultations and delivering supplemental classes to help international students develop writing competencies.
Perform administrative functions as required to support the Centre.

Some evening and weekend work will be expected.

Qualifications
Master’s degree in relevant discipline (e.g., English for Academic Purposes, Education in Second Language Writing Pedagogy, Applied Linguistics), plus approximately three to five years’ experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. Experience working with a diverse range of post-secondary, international students in a tutoring and advising role preferred. Knowledge of key academic writing issues and challenges facing international students as they transition into and through university; strong understanding of the Writing Studies theory and practice of student writing development generally, and, academic writing (English for Academic Purposes). Excellent writing and tutoring ability; demonstrated evidence of program development and implementation.
