Deakin University Hiring for Senior Software Engineer Job at Melbourne, Australia Full Time

We are currently seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead the evolution of our development, applications architecture, operations, automation, testing and DevOps. As a Technical Guru with a strong skill set in both back-end and front-end development, you will have a high level of engagement with our senior leadership team, leading process and performance change initiatives that increase value and efficiency within the team.

A crucial element of your role will be to provide consultation, solution design, development, support and governance for the project and the team, as well as leading strategic initiatives within the Institute.

As a successful candidate, you will provide complex analysis, reporting and programming support, specifically research and contract programming, technical problem solving, support of user acceptance testing for the group’s project, as well as mentoring, guidance and daily supervision of junior and short-term team members such as interns.

This position sits within the Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute in Research at our Burwood campus in Melbourne and may supervise staff and lead cross-functional delivery teams across multiple domains.

Your key responsibilities will include, and not limited to:

• Providing leadership and ensuring projects deliver the target outcomes by selecting appropriate development strategies.
• Creating effective project reports, status updates, and presentations to stakeholders.
• Coordinate and focus team against specified project milestones while respecting the functional and quality goals.
• Identification, negotiation and management of project resource requirements.
• Creating and communication designs and architecture that reflect best practice.
• Creating methods and tools to improve productivity and quality, and champion their adoption within the group.
• Supervising and mentoring junior staff members.
• Identifying and champion adoption of reusable patterns and proven techniques from existing projects, open-source projects and other relevant sources.
• Proactively identifying opportunities and champion solutions that improve the group’s capability and operational methods.
• Champion and lead a focus area (e.g., security) by identifying capability gaps, contributing to the group’s knowledge base, and advising the technical leadership team on strategic investments.

To be successful, you’ll have:

• Bachelor’s in computer science and Software Engineering or related field.
• Extensive experience in engineering full-stack (web and/or mobile) applications using an enterprise grade technology stack (e.g., Java/Spring Boot, C#/.NET or similar languages/frameworks).
• Advanced experience collaborating and directing/influencing key stakeholders and staff.
• Demonstrable experience preparing technical implementation strategies for projects that are high risk and involve unclear requirements and/or vision at inception.
• Demonstrable experience working across the full life cycle of a technology project.
• Demonstrable experience with direct staff supervision responsibility.
• Experience working on research projects and/or projects with a quick turnaround time from scoping to delivery.
• The ability to select and use appropriate methodologies, tools, techniques, modeling notations, frameworks, libraries and documentation standards in the context of software projects and the use of appropriate tools and techniques that support project planning, task delegation, and development review/testing/release cycles.
• Fundamental technical skills in the development of complex software systems. Ideally spanning client/server, middleware and back-end, use of object-orientated and procedural programming languages, frameworks and libraries and the use of in-memory, cache, document and relational database technologies.
