He angitūtanga | About the role

The Kaitiaki, Ranger is a crucial operational role position which forms a close-knit team based in the Motueka. You will be contributing to the meaningful mahi in both back and front-country as you assist the operations team maintain the Kahurangi National Park and Mt Richmond Forest Park.

The position will be focused on:

• Back-Country maintenance of Heritage and Visitor facilities. Duties will include:
• Vegetation trimming
• Chainsaw work
• Clearing wind throw
• Spraying
• Hut, building and structure maintenance
• Front Country campsite amenity and reserve maintenance. Duties include:
• Trimming
• Mowing
• Ensuring facilities are kept to a high standard
• Compliance of camp passes
• Heritage restoration and maintenance projects
• Involvement with volunteer and community groups on various projects.

This role may involve living and working in remote locations for up to a week at a time with access via helicopter.

You will have a positive, ‘can do’ attitude, be a total team player and enjoy working in the outdoors. You will be making a hands-on difference in the landscape of our back and front country facilities as you bring your practical field skills to the team. Ideally, we you will display a high level of fitness and strong enough to undertake a physical job and enjoy working in the field in remote locations.

If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

• Passion for conservation with practical approach to solve problems
• Experience in the use of power equipment, specifically chainsaws and scrub bars
• Carpentry or Construction experience (desirable)
• Self-motivated and can work independently and in a team
• Back country skills and experience
• Strong health and safety focus
• Tech savvy, particularly using GPS and a range of mobile phone apps
• A current full driving license

The Operations Team in the Motueka District is a large team with a mixture of both permanent, fixed term and casual staff. The development of the work programme is undertaken by Senior Rangers who are complemented by our supervisors which schedule and organise the teams. The District Team is also supported by temporary, seasonal, contractors and volunteers’ staff throughout the year, assisting the team to achieve conservation outcomes in the Motueka district.
