Do you have a willingness to learn and an upbeat attitude?
We have an exciting opportunity at Dunedin City Library for two individuals working part time as a Library Cadet. You may be in your final year of high school, a recent school leaver, or otherwise looking to start your first job in a customer service environment. These two positions will start in February 2022, working 10 hours per week for a six-month period.
Who we are looking for:
You will be a motivated individual with an interest in the library. A love of literature and reading, as well as a creative brain, would be great but don’t be put off applying if you are not a reader at present. If you love helping and interacting with people, then the library environment might just be the place for you. You will be focused with the ability to stay on task and enjoy working independently as much as you do within a team. Having enthusiasm to learn new things and being unafraid to ask questions will go a long way.
What you will learn and do:
You will gain a great overview of what goes on inside a library, learning valuable skills for future employment with the bonus of putting that first job in customer service on your CV. You will learn about all aspects of the library from buying books, cataloguing, and processing as well as experience in day-to-day tasks such as returns, shelving and helping customers. Your duties will also include archiving and computer work.
No previous library experience is required for these roles and all training will be provided for the successful candidates. There can be some flexibility in the hours of this role by agreement, although there will be regular rostered shifts
We are hoping that working as a cadet will inspire you to consider libraries as a career and apply for a library vacancy in the future. If this opportunity excites you, please send us a cover letter explaining why you want this opportunity, and why you should be considered for an interview.
Please send your cover letter to Kathy Aloniu at [email protected] by 15 February 2022
