The Senior Software Engineer (Full Stack) is responsible for delivering software solutions that enable Shell Energy Australia to implement its strategic plans as well as to flex to meet its future business goals. This particular position involves working on Shell Energy Australia’s Retail Customer Portal: key component of our strategic differentiator of exceptional customer experience.

To be successful in this role you will be a full stack engineer with a front-end focus. You will be a team player, applying modern engineering practices to solve problems and deliver incremental, valuable, business outcomes. You will exemplify self-organising behaviours, a continuous improvement mindset and an inclusive one-team culture. You will champion Cloud adoption, Test Automation, CI/CD, Site Reliability Engineering and new Application Architectures (specifically Microservice Architectures and Event Driven Application Architectures) in your squad. You will be supported by the Engineering Lead in your squad and the Architecture and Enablement team.
Shell Energy Australia embraces the DevOps model, and so the Senior Software Engineer will be required to not only develop new features with ongoing support and maintenance in mind, but also to actively participate in product support and remediating technical debt.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

As a Senior Software Engineer and in collaboration with your peers, you will ensure the following accountabilities are met:

• Collaborate within your team to create, refine, estimate and elaborate your team’s backlog of work and clarify ambiguity;
• Work with squad members, architects, data scientists and/or business stakeholders as necessary to produce “just enough” design (including coaching others to improve their designs);
• Develop high-quality DevOps friendly software features, components, and modules which incorporate key cross functional requirements such as scalability, fault tolerance and security;
• Ensure your deliverables have an appropriate level of unit-, integration- and/or functional tests and thus can be measured against defined acceptance criteria;
• Apply Continuous Integration and Build practices to improve effectiveness of engineering and meet the organisation’s quality standards;
• Continuously deliver/deploy production ready features;
• Monitor and manage the hosted software service;
• Be accountable for day-to-day operation of components, services, modules and applications owned by you and your team – we believe in “you build it, you run it”;
• Monitor and manage the performance and availability of existing applications, and ensure incidents from all sources are triaged quickly to determine their likely impact; and
• Support your team to remove technical impediments and pay down technical debt.

Additionally, you will be expected to:

• Provide recommendations for continuous improvement;
• Proactively seek input from other colleagues;
• Support and mentor more junior colleagues.

You are a self-motivated individual who enjoys working constructively and collaboratively with their peers in a high performing environment, along with:

• Excellent engineering skills across a range of technologies (full stack with a focus on UI). Specific skill areas include:
  • Demonstrate deep working knowledge of C#, .Net Core, .Net ecosystem, deploying .Net Core to AWS;
  • Familiar with other programming frameworks and languages like Node.JS and typescript;
  • Web Development experience (HTML/XHTML, CSS, Bootstrap);
  • JavaScript development skills, with experience applying modern frameworks such as Angular, React, Ember or similar;
  • T-Sql development skills, with a deep knowledge of database design and query automation;
  • An understanding of NoSQL and OODB technologies;
• Experience working with AWS Cloud environment:
  • AWS certified (minimum Developer – Associate) or be progressing towards certification
  • Demonstrated experience with production workloads in AWS
  • Experience working within hybrid-multi cloud environment
  • Awareness of AWS Well Architected Framework will be well regarded
• Experience in modern engineering practices – branching strategies, testing – TDD, CI/CD, instrumentation;
• Agile maturity including knowledge of Scrum and XP practices as well as an ability to coach others in their use;
• Confident collaboration style that encourages swarming to achieve sprint goals and deliver as a team;
• Problem solver not coder
• Experience with virtualisation and cloud solutions and how these can be applied to complex enterprise systems;
• Experience with a variety of architectural patterns, including Microservices and event-driven platforms.
• Experience applying integration technologies, including messaging middleware and modern API-driven approaches;
• Awareness of security for web applications & network architectures
• Experience breaking down legacy monolithic systems to transition to modern architectures
• Full lifecycle IT Systems delivery experience in complex environments (7+ years);
• Strong experience working with business stakeholders;
• The ability to balance the long term (“big picture”) and short-term implications of individual decisions
• A firm grasp on the latest technology trends;
• Innovative and questioning mindset to explore ideas and prototype solutions;
• A drive to find the root cause of issues and resolve them so that they never recur;
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and influence broad communities of technical experts, regardless of reporting lines;
• Experience within the Energy industry vertical or related field preferred.
