Position Description
A vacancy exists for the position of Hydro Team Member, Turlough Hill & Liffey Generating Stations. Built between 1938 and 1944, Liffey Generating Stations at Pollaphuca, Golden Falls and Leixlip joined the Ardnacrusha scheme on the River Shannon to become ESB’s second major hydroelectric development. The iconic Turlough Hill station was commissioned in 1974 and is Ireland’s only pumped storage generation station. The stations have a combined capacity of 330MW and comprise 9 hydro generators, three concrete dams, an embankment dam, tunnels, bridges, reservoirs and the many buildings and civil structures used to ensure the operation and safety of the schemes. Blessington Reservoir itself, which supplies the Liffey scheme, has a perimeter of approximately 60 km and is used for electricity generation, drinking water supply, walking trails and licensed activities.
The Hydro Team Member will be required to work across all functional areas within the stations including maintenance, operations, technical services, civil works, supervision and contractor management. The successful candidate will be required to work to the level of their competence to carry out their duties. They will be required to work autonomously, be flexible and be a self-starter, providing support to other teams and projects as required. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with others is required. The successful candidate will give and receive training as defined by station management to attain and maintain competencies. Initially the successful candidate will fulfil the duties of the Reservoir Warden as part of the station team.
The duties of the Reservoir Warden require liaising with many community groups and clubs, dealing with the general public on a daily basis and engaging with statutory organisations and private landowners on reservoir issues. The successful candidate will ensure that ESB’s interests are maintained and will continually present a positive image of ESB to the public. The Reservoir Warden is required to use a boat and a jeep to carry out their duties and lone working is required frequently.
The Reservoir Warden is predominately based at Pollaphuca Power Station with duties involving travelling across the Liffey Catchment. The duties will require full time weekend and bank holiday work between March and September. The Hydro Team Member will work in a dynamic environment and to meet the business needs the successful candidate will be required on occasions to have flexible working hours including weekend and night working and be available for call-outs.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be required to carry out a range of duties not limited to the following:
Delivery of work across all areas of the station, including maintenance, operations, civil works, technical and support functions.
Working safely, flexibly and to competence, as part of the overall team.
Attain and retain competence in powerboat training, immersion training and trailer towing
Presenting a positive image of ESB to the public
Engaging with the public when on ESB lands to ensure that ESB’s safety policies are observed and that ESB’s occupier’s liability obligations are delivered
Meeting with other public bodies, emergency response agencies and community groups as necessary
Keeping a record of all issues involving third parties affecting ESB Liffey and Turlough Hill land
Checking and ensuring all activity permits are valid
Responding to plant alarms and indications
Checking of and recording plant and dam instrumentation readings in ESB IT systems
Carry out authorized roles under the safety rules as required (Safe Systems of Work)
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
The successful candidate will be self-motivated and required to work as part of a close team in a Generating Station environment, interacting effectively with other station staff and contractors as necessary.

The position is based on Turlough Hill and Liffey Generating Stations and the Liffey catchment, predominately at Pollaphuca.

Salary
€30,500 – €36,500
General
The role will include evening, weekend and Bank Holiday work. Lake warden patrol is full time during the summer months and will be rostered.
While initial appointment will be to this position, rotation within Generation and Trading will be a feature of the role.
