Summary:
Facebook is seeking a Mechanical Engineer, Data Center Design – Equipment Standards to support equipment standardization within the Data Center Design team. In this role you will provide oversight of large equipment standardization and procurement for multiple data center projects around the world.This role will be with our Data Center Design Global Standards team and will partner with Sourcing Engineering and Equipment Strategy (DES) teams to provide an industry-leading approach to data center equipment standardization and deployment strategies. This role will develop and maintain equipment standards globally as well as manage equipment changes that arise during construction.Our data centers are the foundation upon which our software operates enabling innovation for the company. Building and operating data centers the “right” way from the day they go live is synonymous with ensuring capacity availability and capital conservatism. The data center design team approaches facility design from the chips on the server boards to the facility mechanical and electrical distribution systems which ensure and maximize efficiency of our compute infrastructure. This position is full-time.The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, a proven track record in proactive team leadership and a strong background in all aspects of mechanical engineering. A thorough understanding of interdependent disciplines, such as electrical and controls, is strongly desired. This person shall be detail-oriented, possess strong organizational skills, and be a self-starter that can excel with little direction.
Required Skills:
Collaborate with the DES and Sourcing teams to ensure OFCI Equipment designs are ready for project deployment
Develop and streamline OFCI workflows within the Data Center Design organization
Evaluate mechanical equipment change requests from stakeholders and approve additions and revisions of mechanical equipment to the Approved Product List (APL)
Provide technical due diligence review and evaluation of Design Change Improvements (DCI) related to OFCI equipment
Reconcile and bring to closure technical differences from site conditions versus Standards submittals
Review and approve Project Bill of Material (BOM) with Sourcing team
Develop strong industry relationships with other data center peers and organizations to maintain current knowledge on industry trends
Assume the role of a “Subject Matter Expert” within Facebook for all Owner-furnished mechanical equipment used in datacenters and provide technical inputs to other cross-functional teams within Facebook as needed
Up to 25% travel domestically and internationally when needed for engineering studies, systems audits, testing, and commissioning
Participate in system failure or related incident Root-Cause-Analysis (RCA)
Respond on an as-needed basis to emergencies
Minimum Qualifications:
BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent field experience
Mechanical Professional Engineer registration
Minimum of twelve (12) years of work experience in data center design, construction, operations, maintenance, or R&D – with specific expertise in mechanical equipment
Working knowledge of cooling system design and installation, including evaporative cooling, chilled water, process ventilation, and other cooling technologies
Working knowledge of water distribution system design and installation
Working knowledge of refrigerant-based systems and technology, including operation and code requirements/limitations
Working knowledge of equipment manufacturing standards and design
Experience working with interrelated mission critical building systems, including mechanical, civil, fire protection, automation, structural, and architectural systems
Working knowledge of industry standards, building codes and safety standards including IBC, IMC, ASHRAE, NEC, ANSI, NFPA, UL, AMCA, AHRI, and UFC
Working knowledge of international standards including IEC, CE and EN
Experience providing solutions to complex projects under pressure
Effective communications skills, fluent in English
Familiar with AutoCAD, Revit, MS Office, Visio, SKM, Agile software
Preferred Qualifications:
Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
Familiar with construction processes, cost estimating processes, and BOM structures
Familiar with global supply chain processes and practices
Equipment-specific certifications
Strong cross-discipline knowledge of complete critical facility systems
PMP Certification
