Overview
The Birthplace is located within University of MN Masonic Children’s Hospital, which provides an exceptional focus to family centered care. Staff on the Birthplace are committed to provide families with the knowledge and skills to achieve their goals, as well as recognize the importance of families feeling empowered in their care and their expectations at birth.
The Birthplace supports not only women in our culturally diverse community, but also support women across the state whom may need additional attention due to a high risk pregnancy or fetal diagnosis. Provider care is supported by OB Physicians, Maternal Fetal Medicine Physicians, Family Practice Physicians, Certified Midwives, and Anesthesiologists.
Our collaborative team supports both low risk and high risk pregnancies and births. If applicable to support additional clinical needs of our newborns, a Level 4 Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is located just across the hall from the Birthplace.
With our partnership with the University of MN, The Birthplace supports the development of Student Nurses and Residents through onsite observation and training. This addition also helps continue to enhance our evidence based practice and ongoing professional learning.
Labor and Delivery:
14 Labor rooms, 3 Triage, 3 OR’s, 10 pregnancy special care rooms
Nurse to patient ratio: We support AWHONN standards
Staff on the Unit: The Birthplace team under the leadership of the Nurse Manager includes Nurses and Nursing Station Technicians (NST’S). Core: 14 nurses, 2 NST’s per shift
The unit is also supported by Scrub Techs (Under the leadership of the Main OR), OB providers and Midwives.
We also are in strong partnership with the Nursing staff on Newborn Family Care Center (NFCC) and the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Labor support: The unit supports multiple interventions to reduce primary cesarean section rates and help support low risk births. This includes the use of ambulation, birthing balls, birth slings, use of tubs, and support from student or personal doulas.
Pain Management: In addition to labor support, patients do have the option of utilizing labor slings, clinical aromatherapy, nitrous oxide, or receiving an epidural.
This position will be working 48 hours every two weeks on the night shift, 8 hour shifts, every other weekend. There is a $4.00 shift differential on the night shift. The position is eligible for benefits including loan repayment.
Responsibilities/Job Description
Care and assessment of the Low Risk and High Risk pregnant mother/family
Care and assessment of the antepartum and postpartum mother
Fetal monitoring assessment and documentation
Advocating and partnering with the mother/family on assessment, planning, and goal setting
Supportive and effective team member
Support the culture of safety and communication
After gaining Low and high risk labor experience, nurses will be trained to circulate in the OR. L&D Nurses also have the opportunity to apply for our FLEX team after a year of Labor and OR experience. In this position they will extend their clinical skill set to also support the continuum of care for the mother and baby couplet on the Newborn Family Care Center when staffing needs arise.
Qualifications
Required:
MN RN License
1 year of recent OB experience
BLS (basic life support)
