The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. Job Description
Plant Analysis, I&C and Electrical (PIE) is looking for an intermediate/advanced Electrical Engineer to join the unit in developing technology concepts for the reactor protection system for a new submarine. Â The successful candidate will be a part of a growing cross-site team developing high level concepts for the instrumentation and control (I&C) system, rod control system and other reactor plant systems for the next SSN including integrating the electrical power systems by using his/her technical knowledge of design, testing and operation of shipboard electrical systems.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute their knowledge in the areas of generic I&C systems, integrated power systems, power electronics, and/or shipboard information systems to the overall efforts of the unit. Â In addition, this position will require knowledge of propulsion plant systems as well as the reactor protection system where these systems interface with I&C and power distribution systems.
Typical responsibilities include:
Complete feasibility studies for incorporating new technology concepts into a next SSN I&C and/or power system design.
Evaluate and propose changes to existing electrical system and/or component designs to spur advancing the technology for the next SSN.
Interface with Fleet Power Plant Electrical communities for potential next SSN improvements items.
Review Type III hardware building block specifications for next SSN integration and interact with the community to support Type III I&C development.
Provide succinct summaries, both oral and written of proposed and completed work.
Frequently interact with other units at NNL, NR, BPMI and Shipyards.
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
BS degree in engineering or Bachelor’s degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience; or
MS degree in engineering or Master’s degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of one year of relevant experience.
Preferred Skills
Experience in the design and/or operation of I&C and/or electrical power systems.
BS Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university
Demonstrated ability to across multiple organizations.
Strong interpersonal and verbal communication.
Strong written communication skills with an ability to articulate technical ideas in a clear and concise manner.
Demonstrated can-do proactive approach that displays self-motivation, commitment, ownership, and personal accountability.
Effective time and management skills.
