An Ophthalmic Assistant contributes to the assessment, planning and delivery of eye care. Working under the direction of an ophthalmologist, the Ophthalmic Assistant provides care to the patient undergoing treatment within our clinical and diagnostic testing areas. They work independently within his/her scope of practice and collaborate with other members of our health care team.

The Ophthalmic Assistant will train to be competent at the following profession related skills:

• Provide direct patient care
• Perform a basic work-up: auto-refraction, lensometry, patient history, visual assessment, measurement of IOP, pachymetry, and other designated tests
• Perform automated perimetry: providing patient instruction, observation, and assistance during testing
• Perform diagnostic imaging such as Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT), Anterior Segment Imaging (ASI), posterior segment imaging such as fundus photos and HRT
• Collect and prepare data of all testing results for interpretation by physician
• Operate and maintain ophthalmic equipment
• Calibration and sterilization of ophthalmic equipment
• Stock examination lanes and various areas of the clinic
• Troubleshoot common problems with ophthalmic equipment

The Ophthalmic Assistant will:

• Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary eye care team
• Demonstrate participation in on-going educational activities that maintains skills and knowledge
• Perform other duties as assigned

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• Proficient Computer skills (MAC/Windows/NT)
• Proven good interpersonal and communication skills
• Capable of coping with a mentally and physically demanding work environment
• Able to function independently as well as interdependently
• Demonstrated commitment to ongoing education and upgrading of skills
• Proven good attendance record
• Ability to attend work on a regular basis

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) under the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)
• Recent related experience in ophthalmology
• Knowledge of ophthalmic anatomy and physiology
• Knowledge of medical terminology
• Current BCLS

Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract

Salary: $16.50-$19.00 per hour

Schedule:

• 8 hour shift
• Monday to Friday
