The Mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veteran Benefits Administration (VBA) is to provide benefits to our Veterans that they have earned through military service. Under VBA, the Office of Business Integration (OBI) is tasked with improving, simplifying and accelerating delivery of benefits to our Veterans. In meeting these goals, OBI strives to acquire managed service solutions that are effective and use efficient Information Technology (IT) to achieve desired VBA results. Your contributions as a Senior Software Developer will be vital to providing a positive, high-quality benefits delivery to our nation’s veterans.
We are seeking a Senior Software Developer with strong skills and hands-on experience in a DevOps environment to support the development of and continued enhancements to support a progression from a paper-based system towards an automated (or computer-assisted) processing environment. Your contributions and leadership will be vital to providing a high quality user experience to our customers. You will utilize your highly proficient Java skills to incorporate new technologies into the application platform.
In your role as the Senior Software Developer, you will work within agile teams to develop customer-centric applications that support Veterans and their families in receiving benefits and services. You will perform complex analysis, design, development, testing, and debugging of computer software ranging from operating system architecture integration and software design to selection of computer systems, language, and/or equipment. Your activities will include designing, coding, and testing of systems using test driven development techniques and improving overall performance of any application or module under examination.

As the Senior Software Developer, you will:
Design and build solutions consistent with enterprise architecture reference standards.
Work closely with the technical and leadership teams to actively identify and log technical issues or risks associated with a project, escalating them, as appropriate, and possibly implementing mitigation strategies for risk prevention and timely resolution.
Work with a team of developers who are responsible for multiple, complex, cross-functional projects by providing training, mentoring/coaching, setting priorities/direction, monitoring quality, and evaluating performance.
Communicate effectively even when not interacting face-to-face. Must have outstanding verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills.
Work with business partners of varying levels to understand, expand, and gather system requirements.

Required/minimum qualifications :
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
10+ years of relevant work experience as a Developer.
Java development experience with demonstrated skills in Patterns, framework, and 3 or 4-tier service-layer platforms.
Understanding of front-end CSS, JavaScript, ajax and servlet programing.
Hands-on experience in DevOps best practices, processes and tools.
Proficient on Linux platforms with knowledge of various scripting languages, developing highly available and responsive web applications systems.
Strong skills and expertise with back-end SOAP and RESTful service applications.
Experience supporting deployments, troubleshooting issues, etc. in a clustered environment.
Knowledge of Cloud technologies and developing software using Java and relational databases.
Strong experience and skills at diagnosing exception stack-traces and examining application log files as well as oracle table data.
Candidate must be a US Citizen or Green card holder to be considered for this position.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a public trust.
Desired skills:
Experience with Maven and Jenkins (ideally in a multi-server build farm) and Nexus.
Experience with JDBC and JEE technologies with ability to facilitate the sharing and exploration data through easy to use graphical interfaces and API endpoints.
Proficiency in Grails to incorporate new technologies into the application platform.
Previous experience with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Experience with AI and/or OCR technologies is highly desired.
