Job Overview
The Master Police Officer performs law enforcement functions on University property necessary to protect the life, well-being, and property of students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries, and others through policing, patrol, event security, investigation. They understand access control systems, circulation and safety systems; and effect arrests and provide emergency response as outlined in General Orders and Special Orders, as directed by superior officers, and as proscribed in the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy (or equivalent) and other departmental trainings. As well, they support the University community by providing information and assistance.
In the absence of a Police Lieutenant, the MPO serves Watch Commander for shift.
Work Interactions
Reporting directly to the Police Lieutenant, and working independently with general supervision, the Master Police Officer fulfills duties assigned, performs patrol functions, and completes specialized assignments according to all special and general orders in the protection of life and property at Georgetown University. Working independently with general supervision, the MPO works with front desk operations staff members, police personnel and security officers; interacts routinely with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the neighboring community; and is one of the “faces” of the Georgetown University Police Department.
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalency – preference for college degree
At least 3 years – preferably more – of security related / law enforcement / military experience and community policing [note: An equivalent combination of training, education and/or experience may be considered]
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certification
Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Must be at least 21 years of age
Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with no violations in the last 3 years and the ability to pass Georgetown University driver’s certification.
All applicants are subject to a written test, a report writing test, drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to University specifications, and extensive psychological testing; and must have the ability to pass a comprehensive background
Ability to qualify for a Campus Special Police Officer’s Commission
Possess a current certification in Baton/OC Spray
Successful completion of Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy or equivalent
Intermediate knowledge of criminal and civil law and of police practices and procedures
Certification as a trainer – or ability to become certified as a trainer within promotional evaluation period (for internal promotions) or probationary period (for new hires) – in one or more of the following: Baton/OC Spray, Police Cycling, Field Training, CPR/First Aid, or others as may be added in the future
Proficiency with computer use, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email and/or the ability to learn these applications
Ability to use tact, patience, and a professional and courteous demeanor in interactions with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members
Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including report writing
Respect for the use of police powers in relation to a University environment
Preferred qualifications
Knowledge of telecommunications equipment
Administrative and clerical skills
Essential. The Master Police Officer is Essential under the University Personnel policy guidelines and is subject to on call when necessary. They must be willing to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department – to include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to departmental needs.
