Hays Looking for Financial Accountant at Wellington, Wellington Region, New Zealand Full Time

This large government department is kicking off the new year by adding a skilled Financial Accountant to their Finance business group. Your new role

This role reports into the Finance Manager and works alongside a wider team of skilled accountants, thus giving you a great opportunity to learn new skills from others. The responsibilities will vary according to the time of month/year but in summary you will be exposed to:

• Monthly balance sheet reconciliations
• Reviewing GST, PAYE, WHT and withholding tax payment schedules and resolving internal queries relating to this
• Reviewing and preparation of answers to Official Information Act (OIA) requests and other ad hoc financial questions as required
• Leading the preparation and review of financial statements for external financial accountability publications including the Annual Report
• Support with the design, development and maintenance of the Department’s financial internal controls
• Engage with the wider Corporate Finance team to ensure collective impact of delivering high quality financial control practices whilst Identifying areas for improvement
• Actively support junior members in the team, mentoring them and assisting in their development
• Supporting the finance manager through key system changes and projects

What you’ll need to succeed

This role requires a full CA qualification (or equivalent) alongside a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of public sector financial practices. You’ll have a keen eye for detail with the ability to analyse complex financial data. You’ll have a high degree of MS Excel knowledge as well as experience working on large complex finance systems (e.g. SAP, TechOne, Oracle etc.)
