Job overview
The main aims of the Fellowship are to help in the creation of a new London Foundation School ‘Welcome to London’ and support package for International Medical Graduates (IMGs).
Fellows will work up to a maximum of 80% on fellowships and must maintain a minimum of 20% clinical. See job description for specific details.
Applicants need to be in a trainee programme and can undertake this role as either LTFT category 2 or as an OOP. Due to the short timeline, candidates are requested to submit OOP applications prior to confirmation of role being offered.
Foundation Schools in London are merging to form a Pan-London Foundation School. Over the past few years, there has been an increased number of IMGs who are often new to the UK, new to the NHS and taking their first big step in their medical careers. There is evidence to highlight that IMGs often face increased difficulties with passing exams first time, career progression and need for additional support. Work is now being undertaken by the GMC on courses to welcome IMGs to working in the UK. This project seeks to identify the additional needs of IMGs compared with UK medical school graduates – preparation for UK practice, how to pass PSA, how to be a Foundation doctor – and how to address those additional needs.
The post holder is expected to develop an ‘educational portfolio’ including taking advantage of the broad range of educational experiences on offer within the work of the Foundation School and through wider networking opportunities, with other trainees in Fellowship posts. The successful applicant will be encouraged to submit an application for a professional recognition scheme such as the Academy of Medical Educators or the Higher Education Academy and the post holder would be well placed to read for a Postgraduate certificate or higher in Medical Education.
The post holder will work with their Supervisor(s) to fulfil the aims of the post. They will be expected to work with other relevant Fellows and the Associate Dean (Foundation) and other relevant personnel and trainers within Health Education England. Any ongoing out-of-hours clinical work will continue to be supervised by their local consultants.
You can find further details about the job, organisational structure, recruitment profile, expected outcomes and benefits information in the attached Job Description and other supporting documents.
Secondments
Applicants from within the NHS will be offered on a secondment basis only, agreement should be obtained from their employer prior to submitting the application.
