NZCare and Geneva Community Living have come together to form NZCommunity Living, an organisation dedicated to supporting people with disabilities in New Zealand. Our Whanau Support Services reflect our belief that all people deserve to live fully, have equal opportunities, and achieve their ambitions.

We are looking for energetic and motivated people to join our team of Whanau (family) support workers in the Wellington or Lower Hutt area to support tamariki (school aged children), and taitamariki (youth and teenagers) with their needs and support them to enjoy activities and help build confidence in their homes and communities. This could include going to cafes, to the movies, supporting them to look for work or to join a sports team.

Although prior experience working with children/ youth would be advantageous, this is not essential as full training is provided for these roles.

What does a Whanau Support Worker do?

In this role you would support young people in their home and community to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives. You would support them to achieve their personal dreams and goals by supporting them to do the things they want to do such as going swimming, attending sporting events, arts and crafts, movies or shopping – the list is endless!

We are looking for people with the following attributes:

• Are energetic and passionate about supporting people to achieve their goals, hopes and dreams
• Have an ability to look beyond presenting barriers and provide experiences that will empower people to live the best life they can
• A desire to support people to learn new skills and achieve outcomes
• Availability to work after school hours and some weekend work
• Experience working with young people would be advantageous
• Can connect and build a positive relationship with people through provision of consistent support
• We require a full driver’s license (or if on restricted the abiity to obtain full within two months) and our own reliable vehicle.
• Ability to complete police checks, CYFS checks and reference checks

Empathy, respect, and cultural awareness is important in this role as the people we support come from diverse backgrounds with varying needs and interests.
