The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) offers challenging and exciting careers in health and social services delivery and administration in Canada’s North. The Hospital Receptionist may receive up to 200 calls a day and is the first contact inside the hospital for customers who call or come into the hospital (family members, physicians, patients, general public, other organizations and agencies). This information is highly confidential and sensitive in nature. The Hospital Receptionist may also be called upon to assist with certain registration duties in the patient registration area as required, due to the volume of activity.
The nature of this job is such that many lines are ringing at the same time, and patients, visitors and staff requiring assistance must be appropriately prioritized for support in this fast paced environment. This position also has to make accurate and immediate decisions regarding patients and situations. Failure to perform these duties would result in delays that directly affect patient care.
Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
Grade 12, the successful completion of approved Basic Medical Terminology course, and one (1) year of related work experience in a computerized health care setting.
