As well as continuing the development of our core MBBS programme, the School of Medicine has broadened its offer by developing the exciting BSc Medical Biosciences programme and additional postgraduate provision. The Faculty Education Office plays a central role in these exciting plans by supporting our academics and clinicians to deliver an outstanding medical and biomedical education.
We are looking for an enthusiastic Teaching Laboratory Technician to join a small team which is responsible for the planning and delivery of all operational aspects of the teaching in the Hammersmith campus laboratories. You will work closely with the Course Leads and the Teaching Laboratories Manager to coordinate usage of the labs, provide technical support including tissue culture work for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and ensure the laboratories are appropriately stocked.
You will be based at the Hammersmith Campus but as part of the wider Faculty Education Office team you may be asked to contribute to support at other campuses, so a flexible approach to working is required.
Key duties include assisting in the preparation of practical sessions, including set up, take down and appropriate disposal of waste. You will lead on replenishing consumables, ordering and ensuring the laboratories are adequately stocked. You will be responsible for tissue culture, to include the feeding and splitting of cell lines for students on the Medical Biosciences BSc (BMB) course and other undergraduate and postgraduate courses as required.
You should be willing to assist laboratory users in the correct use of equipment, as well as assisting the Teaching Laboratory Manager in arranging servicing and maintenance for equipment. You will ensure compliance with health and safety legislation in the laboratories, including overseeing provision and correct use of PPE.
Imperial College London offers many job specific training and personal development courses which you will be encouraged to participate in.
You must have a degree (or equivalent) in a science subject and have practical experience in working in a research or teaching laboratory. You should also have proven experience in tissue culture techniques.
You should be able to demonstrate that you can work well both autonomously and as part of a team. Excellent interpersonal, organisational and communication skills are essential, as you will be supporting multiple courses with different requirements running simultaneously.
Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation would be an advantage.
This is a Full Time and Open-ended role based at Hammersmith Campus (with some cross travel to other FEO sites across West London, as and when required)
Should you require any further details on the role please contact Dr Paul Christie, Teaching Laboratories Manager at [email protected]
The College is currently trialling a Work Location Framework until early 2023. Hybrid working may be considered for this role and the role holder may be expected to work 60% or more of their time onsite, with 40% the minimum time spent onsite. The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
