The Marine Team provides towage and pilotage services to Port Marlborough’s export shipping, cruise and Cook Strait ferry customers and is responsible for management and maintenance of the company’s marine fleet of two harbour tugs, a purpose-built pilot launch, and other smaller work craft.
The Launchmaster / Crew acts in the capacity of Master of Port Marlborough’s pilot launch and is responsible for safe operation of the vessel, voyage planning, and the safety and wellbeing of crew. The role takes ownership of workshop and/or marinas vessels as part of wider compliance, operational certification, and asset management requirements.
Consistent with the Marine Team’s integrated and versatile operations, the Launchmaster / Crew also plays a significant role as crew on the Pilot launch and harbour tugs.
The successful candidate will initially be deployed as crew to achieve familiarisation and training, then will quickly advance to include launchmaster duties. For a capable person, there is an opportunity to work towards relief master capability aboard the Port’s harbour tugs.
Due to the nature of this role, a degree of flexibility is needed to meet the 24/7 requirements of shipping operations. This is a safety-critical role and is not an entry-level position, so sufficient maritime experience is essential.
As the successful applicant, you will hold appropriate maritime qualifications with a minimum of Skipper Restricted Limits, and a current Marine Medical. You will be committed to working as part of a high-functioning team and will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and a positive and proactive approach.
