Position Summary: Provides advanced level preparation of the patient for ophthalmic
Tests, evaluation, treatment or education-ensuring quality patient services.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
Essential Tasks:
- Prepares patients and examination rooms for ophthalmic tests, evaluations or treatment. Conducts initial visual testing and history testing appropriate to the specific ophthalmic unit such as but not limited to; pupil testing, basic eye anatomy, general eye drop knowledge, color vision, stereopsis, glare testing, pvam, lensometry, tonometry, keratometry, retinoscopy, refractometry, intermediate knowledge of motility and measurements, Humphrey Visual fields and Optical Coherence Tomography.
- Reports to physician and records patient tests and procedural results.
- Instructs patients on basic information regarding examinations, special tests and home or self care procedures.
- Ensures equipment and instruments are available and operable at all times.
- Assesses patient’s problems with resolution through advice or referral using clinic protocols.
- Manage triage concerns as needed
- Performs other tasks as assigned.

Supervision/Work Direction:
Works independently on recurring assignments semi-routine in nature, applying basic judgment in selecting and applying appropriate established procedures or techniques. Performs variances from routine under specific instruction or guidance. Resolves non-complex problems.
Internal/External Contacts:
Regular interaction with patients, customers, family members, physicians staff and vendors.
Education/Experience:
Position requires high school diploma. The incumbent will have either:
- Successfully completed certification as an Ophthalmic Technician by the Joint commission of Allied Health Personnel of Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) after the required work hours and credits earned at the COA level.
Or,
- Alternately, after completion of an accredited Technician program, incumbent has 1 year from date of employment to successfully complete certification.
Special Knowledge/Skills/Certifications/Licenses:
- Demonstrates knowledge of age-related growth and development principles necessary to provide appropriate service and assure safety of patients.
- Detail oriented individual with strong human relations and organizational skills.
- Ongoing certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician.
Machines/Equipment/Software Utilized:
General ophthalmology equipment including, but not limited to: phoropters, keratometers, slit lamps, tonometers, corneal and retinal imaging, retinoscopes, lensometers, and visual fields. General computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook, image viewing software, and EPIC medical records.
