As an Academic Part-Time Intern , you will be working for JPL’s Electronic Manufacturing, Packaging, & Technical Services Section , which provides engineering services that include the following: fabrication of electronics (boards and cables/harnesses), microelectronic and photonic hardware; electronic packaging, manufacturing engineering and electronic hardware thermal/structural analysis; advanced electronic packaging engineering, technology development and process engineering; technical facilities management and cleanroom services/certification; custom measurement systems development and instrumentation services; calibration services, test equipment loan pool and metrology engineering, and technical inventory management, cryogenics services and Flight Hardware Logistics Program (FHLP).
Responsibilities:
Gain hands-on work experience with reviewing printed wiring board assemblies (PWAs), cable harness designs and generating design, build, assembly and test procedures to fabricate, assemble and test printed wiring assemblies and cable harnesses.
Work with mechanical/packaging engineers to lead teams in solving packaging and cable harness problems.
Collaborate with Quality Assurance to develop solutions to resolve discrepancies with hardware fabrication and develop preventive actions for process improvements.
Work on process related issues in electronic manufacturing in order to streamline production.
Perform routine job functions and activities within assigned area.
Work on day-to-day assignments under direct supervision; receives detailed instructions on new assignments.
Uses applicable policies, procedures and practices as guides to determine work methods and deliver results.
Required Skills:
Must be currently enrolled half-time at an accredited college or university pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering.
Must be able to work a minimum of 20 hours per week, with a maximum of 30 hours per week while in school.
Minimum GPA 3.0.
Has some familiarity in one or more of the following areas: Aerospace/electrical/mechanical/industrial engineering.
Completed coursework with exposure to standard principles, theories, concepts and techniques in engineering or related disciplines.
Knowledge and experience with MS Office.
Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
Desired Skills:
Participation in student organizations.
General understanding and application of standard principles, theories, concepts and techniques in engineering, electro-mechanical design and manufacturing.
Ability to coordinate and lead tasks in a team environment.
Must be a self-motivated and eager to learn.
Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point and Access.
Some experience in mechanical design using Solidworks, Unigraphics-NX, and other CAD tools.
