Kalamazoo Public Library Hiring for Youth Librarian at Kalamazoo, Michigan Full Time

Position Summary: Responsible for professional library duties that support Youth Services and its service to children, teens and their caregivers under the direct supervision of the Head of Youth Services. Duties to include providing direct patron service, conducting youth programming, participating in community outreach programs, maintaining a good working relationship with local schools/ teachers and other area youth-serving organizations, providing reference and reader’s advisory services, and assisting in the development and maintenance of the juvenile collections in Children’s Room and Teen. Provides direct patron service; assists in the location of materials, responses to reference and reader advisory questions; instructs patrons in the use of all library resources. Participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of innovative and engaging programming for youth and their families. Participates in collection development and management of Children’s Room and Teen juvenile collections; reviews new materials and follows established guidelines for weeding collections. Represents KPL at community and outreach activities and events for youth; collaborates with schools and youth-serving organizations to determine common areas of interest. Regularly contributes to KPL’s online presence. Coordinates and creates topical bibliographies for children; works with Marketing and Communications staff to publish when appropriate. Participates in departmental meetings, library-wide committees, and library-related events. Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned. Keeps informed of trends in children’s literature, library services and issues affecting children. Keeps abreast of new materials and those for retrospective purchase by consulting a wide variety of reviewing sources and publisher’s catalogs, attending professional meetings and by reading, viewing and listening. Demonstrates knowledge of cataloging, classification, indexing procedures, and practices to support access to children’s materials. Maintains knowledge of the diverse needs, preferences and resources of the community on a regular and systematic basis. Demonstrates ability to effectively utilize collection maintenance tools.
