Kemper is looking for a State Tax Manager to join its Chicago-based Tax Department.
The State Tax Manager will be responsible for tax accounting, compliance and planning for Kemper’s state and local taxes. The State Tax Manager will work closely with tax department teammates, business partners and third parties to ensure Kemper’s external obligations are met on a timely and accurate basis, reduce Kemper’s tax burden and manage associated risks. The State Tax Manager will be responsible for overseeing activities performed by third parties to assist in managing Kemper’s state and local taxes.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direct and oversee premium, sales and use, income and property taxes ensuring compliance with state and local tax laws
Identify and implement resource plans to meet filing obligations, including managing third party resources
Ensure that accurate, complete and timely controls are in place to manage deliverables
Lead, coordinate and execute upon tax payments, including estimated payments, tax return payments and tax assessments
Drive standardization of approaches and tools across all indirect processes
In conjunction with tax leadership, interact with senior finance and accounting leaders from time-to-time to ensure appropriate awareness and treatment of business activities
Identify and implement tax planning initiatives including integrations
Work with functions outside of tax including procurement, accounts payable, investments, human resources and treasury teams
Coordinate examinations by tax authorities
Lead process improvement and/or technology implementation projects
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field or equivalent training
5+ years of relevant state and local tax experience with an accounting or law firm or with an in-house insurance company tax function
2+ years leading teams
CPA, JD/LLM or MBA a plus
Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S.
REQUIRED JOB SKILLS:
Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects
Strong analytic and reasoning ability, including ability to analyze and review tax law, make recommendations and take action
Effective interpersonal skills, including written and oral communication skills
High proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Experience with Premium Pro tax software a plus
