Comprising the largest dental school in Europe, the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences (FoDOCS) at King’s College London is a centre of excellence in the UK for oral, craniofacial and dental research and ranks 9th in the world (1st in the UK) in the QS World University Rankings for Dentistry (2022). The faculty has an outstanding record for quality assurance in learning and teaching and is the premier place to study dentistry in the UK. The faculty is one of the top centres of excellence in the world for dental education, research and, through its Dental Institute partners, oral healthcare provision.
Our international reputation attracts students and staff from across the globe. The largest dental academic centre in the UK, we teach over 750 undergraduate students, 400 graduate taught students, including 300 on flexible learning programmes, and over 100 graduate research students. The faculty forms part of the Dental Institute, which draws together colleagues from Kings College London and our world-famous associate hospitals – Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Kings College Hospital NHS foundation Trust. As well as undertaking and actively promoting cutting edge basic, clinical, and translational research, the Dental Institute provides both routine and specialist clinical care and educates and trains dental personnel at all levels, including dental care professionals.

The Student Experience Manager post will report into the Associate Director, Education, but they will work closely with course and programme leaders, the Senior Programme Managers and Quality Assurance Manager to deliver the day to day operations as well as reporting in to the Director of Student Mobility & Student Success and working with their team. This is a full-time post and will be hybrid working, with a minimum of two days per week on campus.
Key responsibilities
- To design, develop and monitor strategic provision of the student experience function in FoDOCS and our portfolio of activities
- Work in close partnership with the Students & Education Directorate to implement student success initiatives within the Faculty to secure better outcomes for learners, through negotiation and influencing key partners, including students, academic and professional services staff
- Provide leadership in the development and delivery of an enhanced and distinctive student experience within the Faculty, promoting collaborative working and driving a culture of excellence and customer focus through the student support services across the Faculty, and into relevant partner organisations
- Build effective relationships, providing advice, training and support, to ensure that the student experience meets agreed university and student expectations, to ensure that staff contribute to the delivery of a friendly, warm, inclusive and hospitable campus culture
- Ensure the continual improvement of the experience of all students with a focus on discrete groups of learners, such as international and widening participation learners
- Lead the development of a Faculty student experience plan, considering the broader landscape and the strategic direction of the university, drive implementation of the strategy through close collaboration across and engagement with the Faculty and university departments, KCL Student Union (KCLSU) and other student representatives
- Monitor and evaluate the Faculty’s strategy performance, for example, through implementing, promoting and engaging with feedback activities such as student satisfaction surveys, league tables, module feedback and placement surveys, number and outcomes of student complaints and appeals, and student retention data
- Maintain strategic oversight of key student engagement activities and events within the Faculty, to ensure that a vibrant and inclusive extracurricular student experience coexists an efficacious academic experience, through good team working and communication channels so that all students can reach their full potential
- Implement, co-ordinate, manage and evaluate a programme of cohort building activities, such as social events celebrating student achievements, guest lectures and induction activities, coordinating with the Welcome to King’s programme
- Develop and facilitate student networks to ensure there is a diverse range of activities to enrich the student experience
- Provide specialist advice and guidance to academic and professional service staff on student experience and student engagement, keeping up to date with relevant internal and external strategic, policy and service innovations to inform best practice and continually drive excellence
- Ensure that relevant legislation and regulation affecting student support and engagement is addressed in policy and practice and that the Faculty is compliant
- Work with the Faculty Communications Manager to develop and maintain relevant sections of the Faculty website, facilitate communications and systems (formal and informal) to ensure that the Faculty fulfils its duty of care to the welfare of individual students
- Represent the Faculty at appropriate external meetings, provide secretariat support for relevant committees, working groups and panels as required

Skills, knowledge, and experience
Essential criteria
1. Substantial and demonstrable experience of improving the student experience in a Higher Education setting
2. Experience of developing innovative solutions and practical implementations to achieve strategic change in alignment with faculty/organisational objectives
3. Strong leadership and management skills with evidence of adapting leadership style to get the best out of team members
4. Proven ability to plan and manage successful large-scale events
5. Strong interpersonal skills: motivating, negotiating, influencing and networking
6. Experience of establishing effective working relationships with internal colleagues and external stakeholders
7. Committed to working collaboratively with students and promoting the university’s EDI agenda, including improving student diversity
