Overview:
Reporting to the Western Canada CEO and President, the Head of Sustainability and Environment will work on the development and implementation of Lafarge’s sustainability vision and strategy in Western Canada. This individual will guide the leadership team through policy options and support the development of a strong execution plan that delivers measurable results and aligns with Lafarge’s stated values and business objectives.
Responsibilities:
Strategy Development & Implementation:
- Establish a strategy that provides a comprehensive roadmap for our sustainability journey that is built on innovation, brand positioning and product portfolio development.
- Conduct periodic environmental scans of emerging climate change, environmental, social and governance issues and additional changes to guide the ongoing evolution of our sustainability strategy.
- Lead working groups in the development of policies, positions and action plans that contribute to the Western Canada sustainability strategy.
- Engage internal partners to help drive sustainability objectives and priorities and to align on an overall sustainability plan for Western Canada.
- Support the Western Canada leadership team in providing internal advisory services to businesses and functions on how emerging sustainability issues and opportunities impact their bottom line.
- Develop a central repository for sustainability content, research, policies, positions and action plans.
- Liaise with all levels of Government to explore and secure grant opportunities.
Environmental Management:
- Sponsor and coordinate the application of the Environmental Management Systems (EMS).
- Liaise with Group Health, Safety and Environmental on Environmental policy, tracking and action plans.
- Ensure environmental audits are conducted in accordance with Lafarge policy and audit
- results are communicated to the market leaders.
- Ensure preparation of complete applications for approvals, licenses or permits for respective jurisdictions.
- Establish industry networks.
- Identify and drive involvement with organizations, forums, conferences and other engagement opportunities to further our environmental goals.
Reporting & Disclosure:
- Responsible for publishing Lafarge Western Canada’s content for the annual Sustainability Report that highlights our progress and performance against approved sustainability goals and commitments.
- Develop and align the organization sustainability critical metrics that will be tracked, and engage with businesses to measure and report on these metrics.
- Work with Group to ensure products are classified, certified and incorporated into the sales system to facilitate accurate product sustainability reporting.
- Work with markets to track sustainability targets.
- Complete monthly financial sustainability reporting and manage responses to both Finance and Group queries on the results.
- Lead the research to routinely benchmark Lafarge relative to our industry competitors on sustainability performance.
Internal and External Engagement:
- Establish a strategy for external engagement to promote the sustainability journey, including boards, initiatives, forums and conferences.
- Support the CEO and Western Canada leadership team on ongoing stakeholder engagement.
- Apprise leadership of any changes to government policies and programs which may create opportunities or challenge business imperatives.
- Represent Lafarge in Western Canada on various external associations and working groups, including sharing key learnings and practices with internal partners.
- Develop and maintain a strong external network of sustainability leaders at peer companies.
- Engage regulatory bodies and support Western Canada executive through position papers and policy advocacy that support our sustainability strategy.
- Work with Communications and other segments and business units to identify, develop and implement opportunities to engage employees and external stakeholders in sustainability efforts.
- Work with Communications to develop the engagement strategy for the sustainability journey in Western Canada.
- Receive, triage and address stakeholder issues.
Qualifications:
- A graduate degree in a relevant field of study (Sustainability, Environment, Climate Change) with a post-graduate degree is considered a strong asset.
- 10+ years of progressive experience leading and executing corporate sustainability initiatives.
- Strong understanding of emissions reporting (GHG/greenhouse gas protocol), TCFD (Task Force on Climate related financial) and SASB (Sustainability Accounting Standards Board).
- Excellent analytical skills.
- You are results oriented with excellent organizational skills.
- Knowledge of, and exposure to, financial reporting.
- Proven strategy/planning leadership across diverse stakeholder groups.
- Excellent people leadership skills, both with direct reports and with peers and indirect reports.
- Outstanding ability to influence senior leaders and colleagues across the enterprise.
- Outstanding written communication and presentation skills.
- A strong external network of sustainability peers in other companies.
- Experience using community investment programs to support and amplify a sustainability strategy.
- Familiarity with governmental advocacy an asset.
