About the Job
In accordance with NRC regulations, 105 CMR 120, and ANSI standards, supports LHMC’s Radiation and Laser Safety programs, assuring a safe environment for colleagues to provide quality diagnostic and therapeutic procedures utilizing radiation and/or lasers in a proactive and efficient manner.
The goal of the Health Physics and Radiation Safety Program is to ensure that radiation dose from ionizing radiation to workers, members of the public, and the environment are as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) below the limits established by regulatory agencies. The goal of the laser safety program is to ensure the safe-use of these non-ionizing radiation producing devices. These safety programs also ensure that individual users conduct their work in accordance with institutional, state, and federal requirements. This position provides programmatic support under the direction of the Radiation Safety Officer while liaising with key partners in Radiology, Radiation Oncology and other departments which utilize ionizing radiation and lasers.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:
Ensures that appropriate surveys are performed in areas with radioisotopes present or patients present with body burdens of radioisotopes.
Assists with the oversight of the quality assurance program for dose calibrators, assuring linearity, accuracy and geometry.
Assists with annual calibration of survey meters and counters.
Performs routine quality assurance of exit monitors.
Assists with source inventories and semi-annual wipe tests of long-lived sealed sources.
Assists with the maintenance and operation of the radioactive materials decay storage room.
Assists with the preparation and clearance of rooms used for brachytherapy and radioisotope therapies.
Assists in the oversight of the receiving and shipping of radioactive materials to and from Lahey Hospital & Medical Center and Lahey Medical Center Peabody and maintains accurate material records.
Supports the education and credentialing activities in the Department.
Supports Lahey’s ALARA Program and personnel exposure program including badging and reporting.
Assists the RSO as a primary member of the Radiation Safety Committee, and provides a link between the Radiation Safety Committee and Lahey’s users of ionizing radiation.
Secondary liaison for matters regarding ionizing radiation and lasers between LHMC and federal, state, and local governing and accrediting bodies.
Under the direction of the RSO, coordination, scheduling, documentation and implementation of Training, Education & Credentialing Programs pertaining to both Radiation and Laser Safety Programs which would encompass mandatory and specific education and credentialing requirements for all colleagues including and not limited to physician staff.
Assist s in the ongoing development and implementation of Health Physics & Radiation Safety Fellows program for eligible internal staff and external candidates from accredited colleges and universities pursuing degrees in physics, radiation science, or equivalent.
Support s the on-site oversight of student interns or colleagues working within the Health Physics & Radiation Safety Program.
Programmatic Support of Laser Safety as appropriate. May serve as Laser Safety Officer (if qualified)

Minimum Qualifications:
Education : Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Radiation Science or equivalent.
Licensure, Certification, Registration: None. Working towards eligibility in accordance with NRC and/or Massachusetts DPH Radiation Control Program regulations for ARSO. ABHP Board certification eligible or equivalent. (NRRPT) Laser Safety Officer Certification eligible or equivalent.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Requires strong oral and written skills to properly document procedures, tests, and activities along with the ability to effectively interact with other medical physicists, physicians and technical staff. Educational or teaching experience preferred.
Experience: 0-5 years of health physics and radiation safety related experience in a clinical or related setting preferred.
