POSITION SUMMARYThe Charge Nurse plans, coordinates, provides and manages nursing care, nursing services and healtheducation to nursing home residents. The Charge Nurse cares for residents under the direction andsupervision of the Director of Nursing. The position requires patience, compassion and a desire to carefor the residents in a gentle and empathetic manner.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES• Supervises the care/services provided by the Certified Nursing Assistants and other staff whoprovide services to the Residents for which the Charge Nurse is responsible.• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizational policies andapplicable laws.• Supervisory responsibilities include:o Plans, assigns and directs work in accordance with the needs of residents and the skilllevels of the available staff.o Prepares work assignment sheets, taking into consideration Resident safety, theeducational preparation, experience, knowledge and ability of the persons to whom theassignments are made.o Receive calls and finds replacement for absent staff.o Transfer employees among units as needed.o Prepares performance evaluations with the understanding such evaluations impact tenureof probationary employees and wage increases of non-probationary employees.o Make recommendations with regard to rewarding, disciplining or terminating employeesunder their supervisions.o Schedules and adjusts lunch and rest breaks.o Receives and resolves employee complaints.o Determines rotation of employees within unit.o Interviews, recommends hires and trains employees.o Monitors and corrects job performance.• In the absence of higher ranking management charge nurses are responsible to oversee theoperations of their units and the facility as a whole.• Uses independent judgment and discretion on behalf of the organization in the performance ofthese duties while following Ciena Healthcare and facility policies and procedures.QUALIFICATIONSEducation and/or Experience:• Demonstrates knowledge of basic nursing practice with an interest in gerontological nursing.• Prefer 2 years experience in a long term care setting. INFORMATION MANAGEMENTComputer knowledge and use is required. Enters or records data timely and accurately, protectsconfidentiality of patient information, protects data against loss or destruction, logs onto the systemusing own password, logs off the system when leaving the work station, reports suspected violation ofsecurity/confidentiality issues, review data and identifies trends and deletes passwords of employees nolonger needing access to software programs.WORK ENVIRONMENTThe work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounterswhile performing the essential functions of this job.
