Role Overview:
In Lilly IP Legal, we strive to file, issue, maintain, and enforce an IP portfolio that maintains exclusivity and maximizes value for our discovery, research, and development pipeline, and marketed products. This senior director role will be a key leader in developing and delivering IP portfolios for Lilly’s Neuroscience therapeutic areas and business units.
Responsibilities:
Highly experienced and strategic patent attorney with impeccable judgment and exceptional leadership and people management skills who will lead the Neuroscience patent team in providing global strategic legal advice and counsel senior leadership on matters related to Neuroscience. This position reports to the Vice President- Deputy General Patent Counsel. Must be proactive, agile, and experienced working in a highly matrixed environment, and energized by the opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment with broad responsibility.
Lead and develop an effective team responsible for patent drafting, prosecution, maintenance and strategy for Neuroscience, informed by internal legal and business strategy, external legal and industry landscape awareness;
Support appropriate training, coaching and development for the team, and facilitate an environment of shared learning and efficiency throughout the patent procurement legal group.
Develop effective relationships, partner with and become an integral member of with the Patent Procurement Lead Team and IP Lead Team regarding patent filing, maintenance, defense and enforcement strategies, and related departmental management responsibilities;
Effectively partner and coordinate with Neuroscience Leadership on patent filing and maintenance strategy with long-term strategic considerations in mind, as well as strategic prioritization;
Provide legal counsel and advise leadership and senior management in Neuroscience-related patent strategy, including relevant Business Units (BU) and Lilly Research Labs (LRL) as well as to identify, prevent and solve complex problems and drive solutions with significant business impact.
Facilitate and coordinate post-execution agreement integration, including Agreement Management systems, Alliance Management, LRL and BU.
Basic Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in the biological and/or chemical sciences that together with prior work experience, provides essential background for effective communication with scientists and management about scientific aspects of discovery, development, and commercialization of all aspects of pharmaceutical products, including small molecule, biologics (including peptides and antibodies), and awareness of siRNA and gene therapy and editing product landscapes.
Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) degree from an accredited U.S. institution.
Minimum of 7 years of post-JD experience as a practicing patent attorney with significant prosecution, transaction, and at least some litigation experience at a pharmaceutical company.
Presently admitted to practice law in at least one US jurisdiction and presently licensed to represent clients in patent matters before the USPTO; in good standing in each state and in the USPTO; no discipline issues on record.
