This position will be filled at either the Software Developer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Software Developer 1 ($67,800 – $107,700)
A major threat to our Nation’s security is the uncontrolled outbreak of infectious disease. Stopping the spread of disease-from naturally occurring or manmade threats-requires an in-depth understanding of pathogens, how they work, the host response to pathogens, as well as advanced methods for detection, diagnosis, and treatment. The Genomics and Bioanalytics Group (B-GEN) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) tackles these challenges using an array of sophisticated approaches, including advanced genomics and bioinformatics.
The bioinformatics team in B-GEN develops and maintains a collection of advanced bioinformatics software suites, including the EDGE Bioinformatics (https://edgebioinformatics.org/). We also develop and support automated data processing for the National Microbiome Data Collaborative (https://microbiomedata.org/) and various biosurveillance projects for public health and national security purposes. We are looking for multiple motivated and talented bioinformatics software developers at different levels to join our team. As a bioinformatics software developer 1 you will maintain our current bioinformatics software portfolio and provide operational support, including software deployment and add new functionalities to existing workflows. You will collaborate with bioinformatics scientists, system administrators, and data managers, to implement solutions to some of the most challenging bioinformatics problems.
Software Developer 2 ($81,700 – $133,100)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level we are inviting experienced scientific software developers with proven record in large scale omics data processing capability development. Experience in software life cycle management, agile software development, and software architecture are expected.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
