Duties and Responsibilities
Implements of programs and services that support student counseling, progress, career planning, and well-being for M1 and M2 students
-Serves as primary contact, advisor, and counselor for all M1 and M2 students
-Helps to create and implement policy decisions that affect students’’’ academic studies, health, and well-being
-Collaborate with Associate and Assistant Deans to define and achieve annual goals for student affairs
-Foster collaboration and cooperation within our University to nurture school-wide programs and mutual goals, and create positive and mutually beneficial collaborations with the Assistant Dean for Diversity, SSOM faculty, course administrators, and staff
-Help nurture social awareness in our culturally rich and diverse community, and foster opportunities to raise sensitivities and improve cultural competencies in our student body
-Serve on school and university educational committees as appointed and participate in local, regional, and national educational conferences and serve on committees as requested
-Interface with faculty advisors and specialty advisors
-Contribute to the development of an Office of Student Affairs webpage
-Counsel and advice M1 and M2 students regarding, academic progress and USMLE performance outcomes
-Help students resolve or cope with personal circumstances impacting personal well-being and academic progress
-Refer students to internal and external resources as needed, including personal counseling services and academic support services
-Identify student nominees for selective awards, scholarships, and outside recognition and collaborate in planning of annual honors programs
-Advise, interpret, and enforce student compliance with internal and external policies and be a resource of relevant policies and procedures for faculty and staff
-Foster and create positive and mutually beneficial pathways for interaction and collaboration with individual students, student groups, corporate student body, and student government
-Collaborate with the admissions office on the Academic Summer Program Integrating Resources for Excellence and other recruitment and pipeline programs; provide direct support for the Second Visit program
-Function as the SSOM liaison to the AAMC Career in Medicine (CiM) program; collaborate with faculty advisor program and PCM1 and PCM2 course directors to insert and support CiM programing in the medical school curriculum
-Provide support to Associate and Assistant Deans with MSPE (Dean’s Letter) production and writing project for M4 students in accord with national recommendations and with Match Week and SOAP processes. Also, provides support to Assistant Dean for student CV writing and review project; assist in presenting CV writing guidelines to students
-Assist Assistant Dean in the collection and distribution of student opportunity information (i.e., summer opportunities) and materials and present information to M1 students. Maintain, update and distribute database
-Support Associate Dean and Assistant Dean writing letters of recommendation for students for external educational, enrichment, and scholarship opportunities
-Represent Associate Dean and Assistant Dean as delegated
-Other duties as assigned
Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
Master’s degree in relevant area preferred with 5-10 years of related experience in higher education setting
Qualifications
-Strong understanding of academic policies, procedures, mentoring and guiding a culturally diverse student body, and demonstrated experience advising students and faculty on highly complex, confidential matters
-Highly motivated, flexible, adaptable, and service-oriented with strong collaborative skills for team work and consensus building among staff, faculty, and students
-Ability to work in a face-paced, ever changing daily environment while remaining goal-oriented
-Excellent oral, communication, and presentation skills
-Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others
-Ability to set priorities and multi-task
-Ability to learn and innovate as needs of university and higher education evolve
-Strong organizational skills are essential
